Game of Thrones at the Awards

Westeros

Recommended Posts

Although HBO’s Game of Thrones was blanked at the Primetime Emmys, the number of nominations the show received was among the most any regular drama series received this year…. and when you factor the Creative Arts Emmys (of which the show won four), it was the most nominated drama of the year with a total of 19. The show’s cast and crew were out in force in support, and thanks to so many people being around Los Angeles it certainly helped get some involvement in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge as GRRM, Sibel Kekilli, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, and Kit Harington all took the challenge for the cause. Others who have participated from the cast: Pedro Pascal, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, and Joe Dempsie.

Besides the Emmys, we were present at Loncon where “The Rains of Castamere received the Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form) Hugo Award. David Benioff and Dan Weiss were both in the crowd, and seemed very pleased to be at their first ever Worldcon for such an occasion. Both of them have spoken in the past of their mutual love of genre literature when they were younger, when they read the likes of Fritz Leiber, Le Guin, and Tolkien, and speaking with them afterward they certainly seemed over the moon at winning the most well-known genre award around.

This is the third consecutive win for Game of Thrones at the Hugos, and this one in particular was noteworthy for winning despite being in the UK, with an outsized UK-based membership who rallied around Doctor Who. “The Rains of Castamere” had a substantial lead in first selections, but as episodes were eliminated “The Day of the Doctor” began to gather more and more steam until coming within passing distance… only for Orphan Black being dropped from the list, and votes for it redistributed, giving the episode a surge that led to its victory.

Weird Al sang a parody of the show theme song begging GRRM to write faster, and Seth Meyers handed GRRM a typewriter in the middle of the song. Best part of the night, in my opinion.

Seth, dressed as Joffrey, also teased Lena Headey about her not loving him "as much as Uncle Jamie" in the middle of her presentation.

I feel like the industry circlejerk did it again: they give one show most of the awards becaue it's the final season and everyone else can go home empty-handed. I'm saying it right now: I find Breaking Bad to be flawed and not just because of the underwhelming finale.

That was a joke GOT should have won many awards. I was so discussed.

 • Yes, I think Peter Dinklage should have won for his portrayal of Tyrion.

In my mind if they weren't gonna give him best supporting actor then Thrones should have won best show.

Its the most pirated show for a reason, and has a smaller available audience because its on HBO.

I just don't see how you give the reward to breaking bad over Thrones.

For a drama to have the kind of ridiculous success it has had with limited viewership to go totally unrewarded is really a shame.

I mean they got shut out! Lol that is ridiculous, thrones gets more viewers than every show outside of walking dead. 100,000 more than breaking bad said one article.

I was like wow I couldn't believe they did that. Mr. Martin was a good sport about the typewriter thing. He went along with it and acted like he was typing to play along with the gag. But I can't imagine he enjoyed being criticized about his writing speed at the Emmys on national television.

It was a parody all in good fun...not a criticism. I think Martin knows the difference.

Anyway, I thought GoT's best chance was Dinklage for BSA, but the Emmys chickened out and gave it to Paul because "everyone else was getting one".

Breaking Bad deserved best drama and best writing. Cranston didn't deserve the Best Actor award over Matthew Mcconaughey, though. Yet another "everyone else is getting one" award.

To me, the best director should have gone to Neil Marshall over Cary Fukunaga for True Detective, but I figured the 'long tracking shot' was going to sway the voters. And it did.

Anyway, now that Breaking Bad is done, we'll see how GoT fares over the next few years. I think next year will be a really hard year to predict, given that we don't know what the season will really turn out like. Anyway, congrats to all involved :)

Fukunaga did 8 hours of really beautiful direction. It was totally his.

Next year I expect it'll be Soderbergh for The Knick, for similar reasons.

Eh, different opinions. I wasn't one of those people who was enamored with TD.

Fair enough. Visually, I think it's unimpeachable.

I will say that it was robbed of Best Actor, though. I may not have cared for the show, but McConaughey should have won that award.

Ah, well. I guess he went home and cried into his Oscar XD

True Detective was beautifully shot, no doubt.

I dislike Emmy bandwagoning something fierce, however. Once they latch onto someone/something, they just can't let it go. See Mad Men for god knows how many years. As for Breaking Bad, I like Aaron Paul's Jesse, I really do. But THREE Emmys for this one role? Really? That's just overkill. Not a fan of Anna Gunn's award either.

I am still jarred when I see major recognition of Game of Thrones in pop-culture. I know it's a thing, but for so long it was our thing. Don't know if I will get used to everyone and their dog getting a joke about uncle Jaime or knowing the significance of the Red Wedding.

If I remember right Dave and Dan said in an interview something like 'we told HBO this show would not get any Emmys (or was it Emmy nominations?).

Now sitting at ~ 20 million per... HBO doesn't care if GOT ever wins an Emmy and Time-Warner has a big smile on it's face.

I thought Dinklage and Neil Marshall both had a decent shot. But for Thrones to get nothing at the actual show??? That is a bit ridiculous. Surely something has to go to a tv show that is hovering around the 18 million average viewership mark.

To put that in perspective. The big bang theory the most watched tv show is on network television and is a comedy and it averaged 23 million. Only 5 million more.

I just wish they showed some respect that's all.

OT, but I kinda know how you feel. For example, in March of this same year, mostly people had no idea who Oberyn was. Now even people who hasnt' read/watched GoT knows.
