Would Stannis take the black ? two scenarios

Recommended Posts

Stannis Baratheon is by far my favorite character his sense of justice and Honor are what drew me to his character and the fact that IMO he is the true king of Westeros and must claw from the bottom to retake the IT but first decides to save the Realm of man because that is his duty. That being said is it ever conceivable if he lost and was "captured" and given the choice betweeen death or the black what would he choose.

Scenario 1) Stannis decides not to shadow baby his brother, and meets him in the field and Renly defeats him after taking heavy loses. Renlys bannerman all want his execution to happen immediately but Renly out of love for his brother offers him the black and offers to raise Shireen as his own heir untill he produces an heir himself which we and Stannis know might not ever happen. Does he agree or lose his head ?

Scenario 2) Stannis manages to rally the north and Riverlands under his banner and they defeat the Lannisters and Tyrells mostly due to Euron giving the reach HEAVY loses and Tyrell bannerman switching to Faegon. Then Daenarys sails into Westeros with Three dragons burns the golden company to dust, and Stannis bannerman all defect and start bending the knee to the mother of dragons. Stannis is left in the Red Keep with 5000 loyal men left in KL. Daenarys offers him.the black or he and his men burn to death what does he choose ?

“Not in this.” Davos was no courtier, and he did not even try to blunt his words. “It is not in Stannis to yield, so long as he knows his claim

is just. No more than he can unsay his words against Joffrey, when he believes them true. As for the marriage, Tommen was born of the

same incest as Joffrey, and His Grace would sooner see Shireen dead than wed to such.”

A vein throbbed in Florent’s forehead. “He has no choice.”

“You are wrong, my lord. He can choose to die a king.”

“And us with him? Is that what you desire, Onion Knight?”

“No. But I am the king’s man, and I will make no peace without his leave.”

I don't think Stannis would take the black. The other comparable man in honour we have known is Eddard Stark. Ned only agreed to take the black when an explicit threat was made against his family. It's fairly clear Ned loved his family more than Stannis does, so the question is whether he would take the black to protect Shireen and Selyse or die for what he believes to be right.

He would take the black in any case he should deem it the right thing to do.

I never thought I could appreciate him more and more thanks to this forum that is a good food for thought.

Pity he didn't taste the peach but I'm appreciating him more and more thanks to this forum :)

If Stannis found out that Jon was Rhaegar's heir and the Prince that was Promised he might take the black (if other circumstances compelled it). Stannis admitted that the hardest decision he ever faced was deciding between his brother and his king during Robert's Rebellion. Giving up his own claim to the throne in favor of Rhaegar's heir would help restore the honor he lost by betraying Arys. Also, he can't stop fighting to rule as long as he believes he's tptwp, but once he learned that he isn't, he could move on to do something else.

Stannis is a man of duty, not ambition, and has stated before he sought the throne because it was the rightful law and his duty to save the realm. To the extent he believes (has been convinced) that all that means him, he will fight for his kingship without relenting.

Stannis would take the black, if it were clearly shown to him that he was never the true Ahor Azai, the only hope for the realm. He is a rigid man, but has waged war, killing thousands, including his own brother, for what he believed was the greater good - but if all that was for nothing, then he has much to answer for.

In a way, with both scenarios, if they sent the message that he is not truly the preordained savior of the realm, then he would serve the one who is, or at least serve the realm itself.

As his individual death would not help the larger situation much, there is only one way to make amends - a black cloak awaits. Valar dohaeris.
