To be independent

The good old days when you didn't run quiet the same risk of inbred madmen ruling over you. The houses that ruled over there respective region were more in touch with it. The Lannisters lived in the Westerlands and they knew the Westerlands, they had thousands of years rep with the Westerlands, the Targaryens live on DS or in KL, they can't possibly know the Westerlands or the people in it. Same for the other regions. Are the Starks, Lannisters, Arryns, etc. the same as the people they rule over? No, but better to be ruled be a Westerman, Northman, or whatever than a line of foreigners in a city far away.

What exactly do people think Independence in Westeros means? The only thing that I can see changing is less taxes.

It means that the top dog of the region is King rather than Lord Paramount and that this top dog don't have to worry about a bigger dog watching him. That's pretty much the difference for 99% of the population.

Dorne ought to just seek independence, and ditch the dreams of the Iron Throne altogether. With only two passes through the Red Mountains to guard and winter coming, they would be able to defend their territory pretty easily. It would be years before the Iron Throne would be able to mount a threatening campaign, and in the meantime the Dornish could prepare.

And then faced warfare forever. As well as the rage of the red mountain lords and Yronwoods for turning their peaceful land into a warzone again.
