Littlefingers In The Air
I had an argument with a friend earlier over whether there is such a thing. He argued that any male that dressed as a female was going to be judged as a homosexual, and that this was because of his "gay look"I argued that from my perspective, all we'd be able to gauge is that the man was comfortable in women's clothing and that I saw no problem. I really don't think there is such a thing as a gay look, because I don't think there's a such thing as a straight look. Anyways, maybe I'm the ignorant one. Have any of you had this sort of discussion before? How was it resolved?
deleted01
I think this attitude is pretty ignorant. I really hate it when people label others, based on absolutely nothing. That said, one of my good friends is gay, and he is a fantastic dresser. So if the "gay look" means being able to dress yourself so you look amazing, I'm all for it. The Fallen
Well some, if not all, stereotypes have a basis in truth. So the gay men we can easily spot have that "gay look" your friend is referring to. Basically effeminate. Now, a man wearing a dress? It depends on why he's wearing it. Is he performing? Is it Halloween? Is it a goof? I would think that the average heterosexual man doesn't walk around in a dress. However, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that a man is gay simply because he's wearing a dress.
TerraPrime
Cross-dressing is often, but not exclusively, associated with male homosexuality. Plenty of straight men, though still a small percentage of all straight men, like to wear female lingerie for sexual titillation. As for gay look, yes, there are always a few gay clone looks, depending on the decade. You can google circuit party, or flip open the latest A&F catalogue, for the current one. Recovering forum addict
How easy gaydar would be if all you had to do was to look for a skirt.
Galactus
Bah, in the future, we will all wear skirts.
Stannisaurus2
There may not be an inherently gay look (or maybe there is I don't know) but if someone is dressing in a - as perceived by his society - gay way then he is doing it for a reason, which usually will be that he is gay and wants to be identified as such. karaddin
I think the idea that the "gay look" is effeminate is falling behind the current times even if it were true at one point. At least in Sydney I'd say highly masculine chiseled muscles with appropriate clothing to flatter this body and good personal grooming is more of a current gay look. Inigima
Are we talking cross-dressing or just dressing well? As TP says, cross-dressing doesn't necessarily mean that, and wearing clothes that fucking fit you isn't "gay," and the term perpetuates the word as an insult. Basically, I think your friend is kind of dumb.

I live in NYC, and yeah, you definitely see those big, buff guys (beefcake!) walking around. But the effeminate still stand out more. Hence why the stereotype lives on. By the way, didn't working out at gyms and being in great shape (aside from athletes) start with the gay community? If so, everybody is acting gay! ;)
Arataniello
Eddie Izzard. Cross dresses in women's clothes, but describes himself (semi-jokingly) as a "male lesbian". Wearing women's clothes is not an indication of being gay.
sologdin
isn't the stereotype more about meticulous grooming and impeccable taste than anything else?
TerraPrime
isn't the stereotype more about meticulous grooming and impeccable taste than anything else? Yes. That's our story and we're sticking to it (and to each other).
karaddin
Speaking of gay looks, it seems like more and more straight women are adopting queer haircuts (and to a lesser extent fashion), how am I supposed to have confidence in perving on queer looking women now?! TerraPrime
Speaking of gay looks, it seems like more and more straight women are adopting queer haircuts (and to a lesser extent fashion), how am I supposed to have confidence in perving on queer looking women now?! That is one of the unintended negative consequences that the gay lib movement doesn't want the MSM to talk about. As LBGT people become more normal-looking, it means that already-normal-looking-before-the-gays-get-to-that-look heterosexual people will be subjected to being perved on more frequently by LBGT people. Now, wearing a torn flannel shirt and dirty blue jeans no longer protects a heterosexual man from being eyed on by gay guys and having long glowing hair and wearing well-done facial make up no longer protects a heterosexual female from being ogled by lesbians. It is a sad, sad world. We should have listened to Anita Bryant!
Gillio
there are queer haircuts? I've seen odd-looking haircuts, and ones I didn't think would suit me, but I never knew they were code for anything!

Gillio
It does suit her. I've had customers with haircuts like these, buying food, I've just chatted to them in my usual manner. (I usually tell people funny (to me) stories like the little boy who only wanted his sausage cut in 3 pieces coz he couldn't eat 4.) I've never even thought about their sexuality, (I dont usually, anyway) :P I might've commented if the cut suited them.
