The Bloody Hound
I've been wonder what happens if a Bastard gets married. Do they choose a new family name? Would s male take the name of a wife? Would they keep the name Snow/Stone/Rivers etc themselves?
Arataniello
I've been wonder what happens if a Bastard gets married. Do they choose a new family name? Would s male take the name of a wife? Would they keep the name Snow/Stone/Rivers etc themselves? It's a fact that all the folk we have met with bastard surnames ao far in the books are bastard born themselves, not descended from bastards. On this slight evidence alone, I think that there must be some 'naming convention' for offspring of bastards of which we have not yet heard. Vikingr
A knight named Jon Waters married and had a legitimate son who adopted the name Longwaters. So their children can presumably choose a new family name.
Arataniello
Dang, had forgotten the under-gaoler. Just so.

Visenya Stark
If the children of bastards want, they can take on a new name (see: Longwaters) so that people know that they are trueborn. But if they want to keep the parent's bastard surname, they can do so.
Rhaenys_Targaryen
The highborn parent can bestow the usual name, a new one of his/her own devising, or none at all. Most legitimate sons of bastards keep the bastard name, but there are cases where a later generation fiddles with it to remove the taint. There's one such case that you will meet in the next book, a minor character descended from a Waters (a bastard name along the shores of Blackwater Bay) whose great grandfather changed the name to Longwaters for just that reason. Link! And [summary: Pamela asks what would happen if two bastards of different areas (she uses Snow and Rivers as an example) married: what name would a child take?] Interesting question. The child would most likely take the father's surname. Link!
Narvi
That is a very good question.
