Blackfyre and the Dance

Just because I thought this was something of a surprising omission. In TPATQ, it's mentioned in some detail which Targaryen crowns Aegon II and Rhaenyra wear at their coronations, but it's not once mentioned who carried the Conquerors' sword (that I recall!). Given we know from the recent information about Aenys' reign that holding Blackfyre was a mark of legitimacy long before the late second century, I thought the lack of mention of the sword in TPATQ looks a little puzzling: surely either Blacks or Greens should have made political capital out of holding the sword of Aegon I?

Any thoughts?

Aegon II had it.

Every visible symbol of legitimacy belonged to Aegon. He sat the Iron Throne. He lived in the Red Keep. He wore the Conquerer's crown, wielded the Conquerer's sword, and had been anointed by a septon of the Faith before the eyes of tens of thousands.

Aegon II had it at the start of the war.. The only thing we can wonder, is if Blackfyre was abandoned when Aegon fled KL, and thus taken into possession by Rhaenyra upon taking the city, or whether Larys snuck the sword out of the city as well.

If Blackfyre was left behind, then Rhaenyra most likely took it with her to Dragonstone... where she would have lost it to Aegon II upon her death.

So in any case, the sword would have ended up with Aegon II at the time of the end of the war.. And would thus go to Aegon III after Aegon II's death.

Didn't Aemond claim Blackfyre when he took Aegon's crown? I thought he must have, but I don't remember such a line... But if he did, it would have been lost during in the Gods Eye, wouldn't it?

...which would mean the dance over Harrenhal included both Dark Sister and Blackfyre. That'd be pretty cool, but would also necissitate it was found in a similar fashion as Vhagar/Aemond's corpses with DS through his eye.

Yeah, but plenty of princes carried it in-between. Maegor, for instance. Could be that it was captured by Rhaenyra when she took the city, then. Aegon II then took it back when he returned to KL.

Hmm.. In any case, it isn't mentioned that Aemond took the sword. The sword is mentioned only once, and not even by name. At the start of the war, Aegon II had it in his possession.

With all the possible scenario's ( 1. the Sword accompanies Aegon from KL to Dragonstone, back to KL; 2. the Sword remains in KL when Aegon flees, and is taken by Rhaenyra, who takes it with her to Dragonstone, where Aegon II takes ownership after Rhaenyra dies; 3.the Sword remains in KL when Aegon flees, and is taken by Rhaenyra, who leaves it behind in KL when she flees, and the sword is later taken back by Aegon II when he takes KL) the sword is in possession of Aegon II at the start of the war, and at the end of the war. In between, it might have changed hands.

Clearly the who, what and where of Blackfyre has been edited out of the story. If Aemond had it, however, during his fight with Daemon, it would have been lost for a few years.. Would a Valyrian sword like Blackfyre be useful on the back of a dragon? How big was Blackfyre, compared to Dark Sister, do we know that?

BF was longer. A bastard sword, compared to DS, which was a longsword

Well, if Aemond had it, there was still no need for him to take it with him when he decided to take on Daemon on Vhagar - he chained himself to his dragon, apparently, so he could not really use the sword, or could he?

It would then have stayed with Alys Rivers - although that would also not make all that much sense. But Aemond clearly would never have left the sword in KL when he marched to Harrenhal as Prince Regent, if he took the sword from Aegon II...
