Key to Citadel?

Was Pate killed? Yes, with a poisoned coin

Who took over his identity? The Faceless Man formerly known as Jaqen H'gar

Who took the key to the Citadel and why? That same Faceless Man. The why is still uncertain, but a common theory is that Euron Greyjoy hired him

Why does Sam describe him as pale? Maybe because Pate was pale, I guess

So you are saying Jaquen H'gar is now Pate. Why? Obviously whoever did it wants to get into the Citadel as Pate, but why Jaquen? It seems unlike the character Arya grew to know. I just don't see that.

Like I said, the way is still uncertain but it's definetely the same guy. The descriptions of Jaqen's new face at the end of aCoK and the Alchemist are exactly alike

I think it will be revealed early in TWoW. It must have some importance to the story, and personally I think it will have some large role in determining the ending of ASoIaF. It would be really cool if that part of the plotline was elaborated on more - the premise is really interesting.

Can we be certain that this Faceless Man isn't another member wearing the same face as the one we saw Jagen change into? I know it is unlikely, but I saw the word definitely used, and definitely, in my mind, means definitely wrong.

Other then the word of God GRRM, no we cannot be 100% certain. However, we can recognize just how much evidence is stacked in favor of the Faceless man that Arya set free is the same as the one in Oldtown.

I just finished re-reading Feast for Crows and was left with a few questions. Was Pate killed? Who took over his identity? Who took the key to the Citadel and why? Why does Sam describe him as pale?

What does the crow say?

I expected that cliffhanger to be brought up early in WoW as well. It took me a few times of reading it to figure out what the hell even happened, but obviously something of important value is in the Citadel. I know they talked of the dragonglass candles, and ancient books that are in there. Maybe the FM needed to get near a maester to kill and assume their identity

Much of the discussion so far in this thread is concerned with what Jaqen/Pate is trying to steal from the Citadel, but to my understanding the Faceless men are strictly assassins. Pate is biding his time to kill someone, possibly a high ranking Maester.

no, its all speculation at this point.

one things for certain, samwell isn't going to die. that asshole could survive a nuclear winter. although he'd whine and cry the entire time, while braver souls than him drop like flies.

That "asshole" is one of the bravest characters in all of Westeros.

"Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?" – Bran Stark

"That is the only time a man can be brave." – Eddard Stark

"im sam the scared, not sam the slayer"

-samwell tarly (aFFC pg118)

the only thing he could do was cry, and when he cried tears froze on his cheeks

-samwell tarly (SoS p238)

"are you still a craven? "

"no, lied sam"

-samwell tarly (AFFC p972)

we good here?

If by good you mean have you proven your complete lack of understanding of the meaning of the word brave and Sams actions in the book, then yes. Now back to the topic.

As tze pointed before, the key was already said to be missing even before Pate was killed. So, it is unlikely that Jaqen obtained the key right after killing Pate.

I'm not sure what your talking about here, Pate traded Jaqen the key for a gold dragon.

But Jaqen chose to cozy up to Archmaester Marwyn, who is now gone. If he intended on replacing Marwyn to get at yet another Archmaester in an even more roundabout way, then he has missed his chance, something I doubt the FM do often. If however he is there on an info gathering mission, then using the "down time" on his mission to find out info from Marwyn/ what Marwyn is up to/ the glass candles, makes perfect sense.
