Egg had three sons.

But we do see a large prominence of daughters sometimes. Maege Mormont only has daughters. Leyton Hightower has 6 daughters and 4 sons. Selwyn Tarth had three daughters and one son. I don't think anything is really out of order here.

1) It's a fantasy series

2) Even in the real world, there are something like 106 men born for every 100 women

Men die younger.

Men work more dangerous jobs.

Men fight in wars.

Men have to listen to wives nagging them for many years.

If the large number of mother dying in childbed in this series is anything to go by, I think the first three balance out.

I just picked the Great Houses because a large sample would be unwieldy in an OP.

If you want to revise it, you could do something like this: http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/topic/84563-most-precise-asoiaf-timeline-in-existence/

google doc and edit OP. Would also let you sort the numbers and group by region and religion

Also, there might be less cause to mention daughters in the text since we meets lots of men on the battlefield and whatnot while their sister are mostly stuck in a castle somewhere.

This. Not to mention daughters might not even be mentioned.

Point in case: Quellon Greyjoy. We know he had 9 sons. But that doesn't mean he had 0 daughters. All it means is that Aeron, who is the source of our information, didn't give a crap about them. Which is understandable, what with his view on the opposite sex.

Yes but what about the appendixes? Don't they list all family members whether or not they're mentioned in text?

And to add to OP Randyl Tarly had 2 sons and 3 daughters

Why do you think this is?

1- Random, being a fantasy story

2- Noble house may make disappear (claim death on birth) female daughters they don't need. A male son is an heir, a second may be an heir if first die, third the same and may become a knight or be used for marriage alliances.

Daughter can be used for marriage too, but in a marriage it was a duty of the wife's father to give a dowry wich in big noble marriages was a lot of money... maybe many did'nt wanted pay it, or pay it a second time

Actually Hoster had 4 son's, 3 died in infancy.

Why? It's a book of fiction and grrm probably never checked to see that the birth ratio for males/females was reasonable.
