It was quite refreshing after the slugfest of feast.

I just did my 3rd reading of Feast. The first 3rd to half is indeed a bit of a slugfest. Very slow and drawn out. Part of it is the fact that it's almost in real time, step for step picking up threads from within hours of where book 3 left off. In previous books, there was always gaps in events, between chapters and even in chapters, except for chaotic scenes like battles, where he used POVS in the same area to continue narratives. The second half of Feast really took off though I thought though and had some really moving scenes. Dance was awesome in comparison though. The mental picture of the Bolton's and returning to the north is very vivid and chilling. Dany eating with Drogon as the the Dothroki ride up. Baristan's fight with the pit fighter standing guard. Astapor's leader's body being put in his armor and sewn to his horse. The smoky scenes in Winterfall's burnt out halls with Wyman Manderlay goading on the Frey's and serving them their cousins in the pies. The Wildlings walking through the Wall. Even the opening chapter, with Varamyr SixSkins. Bran's trek through the snow with Coldhands. Man, I gotta read it again now.

Dance was everything I expected after reading ASOS which was the most compelling book I've ever read. Feast is good in retrospect but seemed lackluster after waiting for so long to see the aftermath of ASOS although now I see it's purpose more and love most of it.

It's like music. You can't have all Rock, you need a bit of Roll now and again for it all to make sense. Otherwise, you end up with a Michael Bay film - all explosions and no story. AFFC was the series taking a breath before continuing, and turning the story about to its post-ASOS direction in the process.

This is so true.

Or a John Woo film
