Books that didn't make the cut...

So I just moved and we have literally *thousands* of books. That's what happens when you love books, you marry a writer (who has a lot of writer friends), and you teach your children to love books. Anyway, with all those books, some of then didn't make the cut and went to the library donation bin instead of the new house. Some of the ones that didn't make the cut are the Game of Thrones series (sorry George), Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series (sorry Diana), and a massive out-of-date-broken-spined dictionary. Do you ever give away/get rid of or do you just keep on collecting? What have you donated recently, and why?

That said, no matter how preachy it is, nobody is ever going to make me give up my 65-year-old copy of Little Women! (it was my mom's and we both read it until it's falling apart!)

I just "lent" a friend three volumes of Hyperion. I very joyfully never expect to see them again.

It's weird - I feel bad just getting rid of books en masse to a library or shop, but giving friends specific volumes (even dozens) is absolutely wonderful.

I have always gotten rid of books. Generally the test is if I really like a book and think I might ever want to look at it again, I keep it. If not, I donate it to the Newberry Library which has a annual book sale every summer which is a big fundraiser for them. [The exception is if I think the book is horrible and should be wiped off the face of the earth - then I will actually throw it in the trash.] But by donating it I don't feel too bad about getting rid of them because that way maybe someone else will discover and enjoy them. I generally donate 150 books a year. Most of the books I don't keep are ones I've gotten at conventions for free where I tried a new to me author who just doesn't end up making the cut. In the past two years most of them have been YA as I just get so many free ones and only a few select ones are really stellar and something I think I'll look at again.

Getting rid of books hasn't stopped several thousand books from permanently parking themselves on my bookshelves, however.

You gave away an entire series of books and then posted a topic about it on a fan site dedicated to those books? That's just depraved, man. :P

I hoard. I have two large boxes full of books and several more piles lying around my bedroom floor, currently. A lot of the crap in the boxes is YA stuff that I won't read again, but don't throw for nostalgia's sake. I'm gradually growing my book collection, but I promised myself I wouldn't buy any more until I've read the ones I've got :s

Me too. It took several trips and about 10 boxes to get my books home when I finished uni, and I've just put a crate of books in the loft.

I find it so hard to throw books away.

To be fair, the last one I bought was AFFC, and I am giving that to a colleague. I figure if I want to read them again I'll walk to the library... and I donated the first three to the library so they could make a few bucks at next summer's book sale. They were trade paperbacks anyway. Who cares about those? I am much more reluctant to give away hardcovers, but will if they suck.

Seriously, the kids probably had 10 boxes between them!

Yup when I was moving back to Wales 90% of my boxes were just books. Only time I give books away are if they were really really bad.

While I own a Kindle, I buy very few ebooks, since they are often to expensive for me.

I really don't like throwing books away, even if they are bad. I almost always give them away to bookstores or libraries.

The same goes for CD's and DVD's.

But at one time, I threw a book in the fireplace. Richard Dawkins The God Delusion.

May I ask why you threw it in the fire? (I will regret this I am sure)

It is so painful to give books away..I am only Too grateful to e-reader...all my life I got threats first from my mother then my boyfriend nit to let more books in the house. I am still mourning for my first copy of treasure island, which I read until torn to (very small) pieces...

Next book I will give away will be TWOW..I will need to buy it because I believe e-version will come later. Then, as soon I will have the e-book I will give it away...I will try at least...

Because it's just bad and stupid. You may know that Dawkins is an atheist who constantly feels the need to tell religious people how stupid they are and that being religious is bad thing. In this book, he argues why believing in god is stupid and bad. My problem with this is, that his reasoning didn't really made sense to me and that he, while being a critic of religion, has no inkling of religion or philosophy. And I'm not even religious myself.

I guess I threw it in the fire because the oven was on and I didn't care to go to the trash. I believe this was the most supid book I've ever read.

I think this was the first book I've ever read. My father gave it to my on my sixth birthday or so. It's a paperback and pretty torn now, but I will never ever give it away. :D

I never gave it away!!! I was betrayed by my family!!!

But a couple of years ago I went to Boston and...they were selling copies of pieces of eight!!!!!

I had wandered all my life what was the meaning of pieces of eight...

When I saw them I felt like Helen Keller if you know what I mean...

I put my copies on top of my new copy of treasure island.

pieces of eight!!!!!

All the "new" e-books I've bought have been available on the day the hard copy of the book is released. I don't think you would need to wait.

I've got so many books, and I really do need to try and sort them out when I move. But some of them I want to keep for sentimental reasons, and others have lovely memories, some have beautiful covers, some I've just read so much that I could never part with them...Its going to be a difficult task.
