The First Law by Joe Abercrombie Vx (spoilers through LAOK for now)

I've seen no recent threads talking about it specifically. And I want to talk about it. Si I'm starting this one. If that's wrong, please feel free to whip my ass.

So, I'm almost finished with the first book already. I thought no one could make me read a book as fast as GRRM. I've never been so wrong in my life. I read book one in three days (and I'm a very slow reader) and it's fucking awesome. West is my favorite character (and my hero), followed closely by Jezal. The characters are so vivid and alive in my head that I can't help but imagine who would be the perfect actors if it came to a movie adaptation (a lot of them come from GoT, of course ) :

Logen : Ralph Ineson, or Joe Abercrombie himself.

Glokta : Andy Serkis or Ralph Fiennes

Jezal : I'm imagining him as a guy I personnally know, but a famous actor would be Jack Gleeson (I can dream) or Tom Felton.

West : Ewan McGregor (not debatable)

Ardee : Amanda Abbington

Arch Lector Sult : Patrick Stewart or the guy who plays Pyat Pree

Bayaz : Ben Kingsley

Malacus Quai : Aidan Turner

Hoff : Stephen Fry, needless to say

Varuz : Charles Dance, just for the hype of it

Feel free to disagree the fuck with me or insult me as you like if you feel this thread unapropriate.

I actually did not like book one that much. Two and three are some of the most gripping fantasy I've read though. It really picks up halfway through BtaH (IIRC). From that point the series became really hard to put down for me--I literally read book three in one sitting, but in the end it wasn't as good as the second book.

But what's with the "VX"?

I'm imagining Bayaz as being bald and a bit fat. Charles Dance is thin.

I loved it one page in, but it's true that the second part is less catchy. A lot of chapters were less page-turning as in the first part, except the ones concerning the Contest and the one from West's POV. (West is love, West is life)

Isn't Ardee supposed to have dark skin and features??

I don't always pay attention to characters description. But I imagine her as Northern and therefore blond. (Yeah, that's cliché, but find me ONE character who's not cliché in this book.)

How would McKellen be confusing? Don't answer me if it's spoiling books two and three.

And Adam Brown should play Forley.

You've read one book. Don't think you can judge if characters are cliche or not. I could point out some, but it would spoil the books.

What about the bald guy from Outlander, the TV show as Bayaz Graham McTavish.

Mackenzie Crook as either Quai or the Dogman.

I forget his name but he played Edmund Tully in Game of Thrones as West

Hannah Simone as Ardee West

Also, the guy who played Ser Roddrick in Game of Thrones as Burr

The man who played the Hound as Logen.

And a guy in a Sontaran costume as Pyke

Oh, Graham McTavish as Bayaz would be great too. He was in the Hobbit as well.

Mackenzie Crook would be perfect as the Dogman. I picture Quai as somehow more of a teenager. And Lee Arenberg would be a good Black Dow while we're at it.

West is Ewan McGregor. This one is not debatable. That's it. Don't argue, it's pointless.

I don't know Hannah Simone as an actress, but if you're looking for a dark-skinned woman, I guess she's physically perfect.

Rodrik as Burr is good.

Rory McCann as Logen is too easy of a choice. You could put him somewhere in the Dogman's band however. Or Bremer dan Gorst.

Haven't met that Pyke yet.

None of the character's are cliche. Read the books.

you should leave this thread and come back when you are done or risk spoilers by irritate posters disagreeing with your early assessment of the characters.
