Started reading Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box today, a novel about a ghost haunting an aging rock star, after he purchased this dead man's suit on the internet and it arrived in a heart shaped box. So far it's a nice, creepy, read for this time of year. Also his Nos4a2 book is outstanding, and his best book overall.

Also you could check out Something Wicked this Way Comes and I know another poster here recommended to read Stephen King's Salem's Lot once the weather turned and the leaves started to change color. I will be taking up that recommendation this year.

Your thread prompted me to sit down and finalize my October plans (and bump my thread).

I would agree with both of those. Adam Nevill's The Ritual would be an excellent read right now - it's set in September in Scandinavia.

Penguin just released a collection of Washington Irving's stories, the ones the publicity people characterized as "haunted American mythology." That phrase feels entirely appropriate to this selection of Irving's shorter works, that includes "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Works well for Halloween -- so does the cover art.

Try Dark Matter by Michelle Paver. It's the story of a man stuck alone in a dark and isolated cabin in the arctic with a bunch of dogs after an expedition goes wrong. A slow burn, but very chilling. (The ending was a bit of a let down though.)

I also second NOS4A2, it's very different from Heart Shaped Box. More reminiscent of Stephen King's early works.

On a side note, I've recently read the book Psycho by Robert Bloch and was pleasantly surprised. It's very good even if you've seen the movie.
