POV character count

Recommended Posts

In Game of Thrones, we started with:

Jon

Bran

Eddard

Catelyn

Sansa

Arya

Tyrion

Danaerys (8 characters)

- Eddard = 7 characters

In ACOK add:

Davos

Theon (9 characters)

In ASOS add:

Jaime

Samwell (11 characters)

- Catelyn = 10 characters

In AFFC add:

Cersei

Brienne

Hotah

Arienne

Oakheart (LOL)

Asha

Damphair

Vic (18 characters)

- Oakheart = 17 characters

In ADWD add:

Ser Barristan

Melisandre

Quentyn

JonConnington (21 characters)

- Quentyn = 20 characters

So, we have 20 characters going into TWOW. We have to admit the possibility that Jon Snow may not be coming back (although chances of that are very slim) and there is always the possibility that he won't be back as a POV character (the chances of that are fairly good, I think.) So a conservative estimate puts us at 19 characters.

19 characters, in a series that started with 8.

I think it's fair to say that The Winds of Winter is going to be a bloodbath.

The question is, which of the new characters are going to survive the coming book? And which of the old ones are now running on borrowed time...

For starters, I think it is obvious that Melisandre has an important role to play. I feel confident enough to put her in the 'safe' category. Brienne, on the other hand...not so much.

Interesting :)

The following were confirmed:

Tyrion

Sansa

Arianne

Arya

Theon

Victarion

Barristan

Aeron

Barristan, Arianne, Tyrion and Victarion will be important from that list I think. I hope aeron will not be important, he really bores me. I wonder where Arya will end up.

Besides these characters I think the following will return: joncon, daenerys, hotah, samwell, melisandre and hopefully jon.

Btw did you intentionally not list the characters who were only povs for prologues/epilogues, such as Kevan? :)

I doubt who will now be the main pov for the red keep (somehow I doubt it's Cersei). I still hope Margaery will become a pov hehe ^^

Oh, I wasn't counting the prologues and epilogues. Those characters tend to be very short lived. :)

I agree that Barristan, Arienne, and Victarion are important. Tyrion, obviously (although I wouldn't say safe!) Arienne is our main POV for Dorne. We've lost a couple Martells already - I'd like to think she is safe.

I think Jon Connington is also an important POV.

As for Tyrells, a POV would be nice, but I don't think it's going to happen...I read somewhere that GRRM said he wasn't going to add any new POVs from this point on. I do think Tyrells will be in control of King's Landing next book - it will be interesting to see how Cersei deals with that!

edit: agreed that Damphair is kind of boring. However he is the only one with an eye on Crow's Eye...

I expect Brienne, Barristan, Theon, and JonCon to die. I don't know what will happen to both Jaime and Cersei, but I'm positive both of them will make it to ADOS. The same with Victarion.

And I expect Areo Hotah, the Damphair, Mel, and Asha to have 1-2 POVs each before dropping their storylines.

As indicated above, I suspect Samwell, Jaime, and Brienne have already been lost.

I have no idea how much progress TWOW will make, but I predict the following characters will die sooner rather than later:

Quentyn (as a dragonrider casualty), Cersei (valonquar prophesy), Vic.

Others (e.g. Hotah) may simply cease to be POVs without dyihg.

ChillyPolly, could you please stop spreading your theories on every thread you see?

Why does your theory say that perfectly-safe-with-Sarellarellas Samwell is dead, and Quentyn the mummer's dragon is alive?

Because I subscribe to the "Quentyn-is-Alive-&-Tatters-is-Dead" theory; the "Young-Griff-is-the-Mummer's-Dragon" theory; and the "Sam-is-not-Perfectly-Safe-with-Sarella-and-Indeed-About-to-be-Offed" theory.

You have your own theories, of course.

Got a link to the last one? I'm bored :)

Actually, a link to the first one too, if it's not too much :)

I do think Sam is about to be obliterated, but by Euron Greyjoy, not the grey sheep. Hope he doesn't die, but if he does, oh well...

Here's an early formulation of "Quentyn is Alive"

http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/topic/61463-the-dragon-rider-adwd-spoilers/

As for Sam being a goner, I know that's been discussed, but don't know if I can find a link. Basically, one inspiration is the prophesy of the man without a face on an unsteady bridge wearing a drowned crow; = the drowned crow as Sam, the man with no face as Fake Pate [Jaquen?] wearing Sam as his new guise, and the rickety bridge as the bridge to the Tower of Ravens.

To which is added the sinister implications of the last chapter. Aemon begged Sam to speak to the Maesters, and warned him against the Sphynx. Instead, Sam spills his guts to the Sphynx and is led away privately into a cabal, consisting of the Sphynx, a sinister mage, and a faceless assassin, who are determined to PREVENT Sam from ever speaking to the Maesters. The Mage then assigns the Sphynx and the Faceless Assassin to "take care" of Sam, by escorting Sam to his quarters, in an isolated and lonely part of the Citadel in an abandoned tower overlooking a river from whence his body can be readily disposed.

Thanks for the link!

About Sam... that sounds oddly plausible. Good job!
