The Media and Game of Thrones Theories

I thought I'd start up a discussion regarding the media and Game of Thrones theories... websites like BuzzFeed really irritate me when they put 'new' and 'mind-blowing' in their blog titles just because they found a thirteen-year-old theory by happenstance before using it to garner more ratings. Theories such as R + L = J continue to 'resurface' and are used in a continuous circle jerk of view whoring when one website passes on the news, and they don't even have the common decency to provide credit or sources to the people who've constructed a theory over time (even mentioning Westeros.org helps) as they actually observed the book instead of being lazy, reposting it without sources and credits, then having a few people think BuzzFeed or whatever media source in this circle jerk of view-whoring came up with this. And can they for all that is holy stop using this terrible picture of Jon? http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140322183538/gameofthrones/images/4/4c/JonSnowTightened-S4.jpg

What are your thoughts on this?

I can't see how even an 'attentive viewer' could come up with R+L=J. I'll admit I haven't watched Season 4 yet, but the main piece of evidence that specifically supports R+L (as opposed to the more general "Ned is not Jon's father" theory) is Ned's Tower of Joy flashback in book 1, and that wasn't in the show.

Yeah, there is only a few spots in the first season that even hint at Ned not being his father and very, very little hinting at R+L. My gf is an unsullied who has watched every season multiple times and doesn't even know who Rhaegar or Lyanna are. I have to remind her every time and she pretty much doesn't pick up on any of Robert's Rebellion backstory.

This isn't about a theory, but Venture Capital Post reported some speculation... http://www.vcpost.com/articles/27129/20140917/game-thrones-update-winds-winter-release-another-three-years-maybe.htm For the love of god, I literally feel obligated to call these guys view whores now. So the story is that Christian Post which is basically a news website about christian news with an entertainment area which is probably to get more views while reporting off of other news outlets. Anyway, like BuzzFeed, they're in the 'circlejerk of view whoring' as well but the worst part is that today they speculated that the next installment in the series won't be published until another three years. Or a decade. I have no comment for this except my middle finger to the media, because it used to be writing honest news. If people need real, dedicated Game of Thrones news, I suggest they go on winter-is-coming.net or this wonderful website here.

So I just saw an old season 4 article and this line about Elia Martell stood out

Two things...

Oberyn believes the Lannisters were responsible... Not the Baratheons.

And also have we saw any Martells in the run up to season 4...

Oh okay.

Crackpot: Doran is Pycelle.

There were also all those articles that were titled "The next 'Game of Thrones' book comes out in October, but it's not what you think", referring the release of The World of Ice and Fire. WOW

Yeah, especially when the release date was already set for October long before that. Someone was just sitting at their computer, saw two month old news, and then posted on their news outlet. Then the circlejerk begins.

Lol, they recently put up the Aerys+Joanna=Tyrion theory.

The comments on that article were fun. I mean apart from the angry "Read the Books!" crowd. (I mean yeah. I love the books more than the show. But their ranting is tedious.")

Varys being a bloody mermaid is an "insane but convincing" fan theory, apparently. The evidence being his comment about being a survivor, his agility, and the name of a ship Littlefinger owns.

Tim Lanning? Is that you?
