Black Dragons
I know the story that Aegon III Targaryen was blame for the dragons (NOT TRUE) the war with dragons and small folks had big part in killing of dragons Also the maesters did not want Targaryen have dragons I think they have big part of the dying out of the dragons. At same time Aegon III did get about 10 witches (magi) to try to hatch eggs but why it did NOT work? that question and what happen at Summerhall? why the eggs not Hatch?. I understand big fire happen lot of key members of Targarens died out. but the eggs? why did eggs stop hatching? was the stars were not in line right? King of Vaes Tolorro
Maybe the blood ritual had something to do with it. Fire AND Blood
Bryanfury
Because magic fluctuates in GRRM's world, and around the time the dragons died out is around the time magic generally faded a bit (but never truly left). However, in the very first chapter of AGOT, the prologue, we learn immediately that magic is making a recurrence and we see the Other's magic, the magic of greenseers and wargs, and eventually shadow, blood, and fire magic becoming more prominent again. Even the alchemists report 'spells' are working on wildfire that haven't worked in a long time. It is a mistake to connect this return in magic to Dany's dragons, because magic was still existent and making a comeback before the dragons were born. Instead, it stands to reason that whatever the reason is for magic becoming stronger is the same reason/cause of Dany managing to hatch her dragon eggs. We literally know nothing about Summerhall except that Egg, Dunk, and Duncan the Small died trying to hatch eggs there as the result of a big fire (and that Rhaegar was born on the same day this happened). My guess is wildfire, but it's just that, a guess.
Black Dragons
To Knight of Vaes Tolorro Sir I believe that the witches that Aegon III did the same thing! blood magic the Targaryens was hatching eggs for 3000 years or more. Lady Blizzardborn
There is also a theory that the Maesters in Westeros are anti-magic and deliberately poisoned the dragons in a way that made each successive generation less hardy until finally they didn't even live to hatch from the eggs. Dany's eggs are said to be from Asshai and that could be part of why hers hatched. That combined with the sacrifice. Only death can pay for life. Queen.Sansa.Lannister
Because magic was coming back (the Others, direwolves, red priests' magic) and because Dany used the recipe for hatching dragons - FIRE and BLOOD.
Jon Dovahkiin Snow
So, in theory, does this mean other eggs that are found could be hatched? Could any of Dany's dragons hatch them? Or possibly even lay a new batch? I wonder if any have been hatched already, secretly, and we will be surprised with a new dragon ridden by a lost character. If one was hatched around the same time that Danys were, we could get lucky enough to see some in-flight dragon combat. A long shot, but it would be amazing imo. Also, according to Bran's dream, there are still dragons living in Asshai.
Lady Blizzardborn
I think so. Also, according to Bran's dream, there are still dragons living in Asshai. True. Though whether those are dragon dragons or lost Targs remains to be seen. Jaehaerys and Alysanne had heaps of kids and we don't know what happened to all of them. Then there's Egg's sisters, Egg's third son, and Aerion's son. Personally I hope it's just dragons, though a Targ presence might be the link for how the story of the Last Hero got to Asshai. aryagonnakill#2
In the time of the Dance dragon eggs hatched without any sort of ritual, all the Targs did was give them to newborns and tell them that Dragon egg was the most important thing they'd ever have and to pray for it to hatch every day, and apparently that worked for a while. Also, wasn't it Aegon the 2nd started the Dance, Aegon the 3rd ended it and hated dragons cause he watched Sunfyre eat his mom when he was young, and Aegon the 4th in the D&E novels that was responsible for Summerhall?
