The fate of Podrick Payne

So In ADWD we find out Brienne is fine for the time being, but unless I'm mistaken there's no mention of Pod. I hope he's still alive as honestly I like him more than Brienne though I cant see where his character can go from here.

If Stoneheart killed him she'll probably become my least favourite character by far.

GRRM confirmed that Brienne's motivation for screaming her word (sword) was to safe the life of innocent Podrick. So it can be assumed that Pod was still alive when Brienne left the BwB to find Jaime.

Whether the brotherhood keeps their word and keeps Pod alive until Brienne returns with Jaime, or whether they killed Pod as soon as Brienne had left (mirroring what they had done with Petyr Frey/Merrett Frey) to find Jaime, we don't know yet.

It would be sad if Pod indeed dies like that, off-page, but his death could be another motivation for Brienne.

It could also be that the brotherhood is plotting to hang Pod while Brienne is away, but he is saved/snuck away by a member of LS's gang who is starting to disagree with her methods more and more..

they kill the frey because LS wants to kill all freys. but they have no reason to kill pod.

Yeah Pod is one of my favorite characters in the book. On TV less so.

I think he is bound for greatness.

He is one of the few, "straight up" characters that is no BS.

I really lost some of my love for the BWoB when they were hanging Pod.

I doubt Hyle Hunt (who is also awesome but less than Pod) is making it out of there alive. Having everyone leave in one piece would make the BWB look weak or harmless to the reader but if Pod or Brienne or Jamie died it would be a huge blow to the story I think since all three of those characters have a lot more to contribute.

After Jaime kills Brienne, Pod will become HIS squire as they both search for Tyrion.

I doubt Pod would be a squire for someone who killed Brienne.

Also:

Interviewer: Is there any character who is morally beyond reproach?

GRRM: Beyond reproach. You mean like good? So Good? Probably not.

Interviewer: I was thinking of Brienne.

GRRM: Maybe. Yes, certainly. She’s up there. She's very idealistic. At least in the beginning. But you know her journey still has a way to go. And my world has a way of testing one's ideals, so we'll see by the end.

Brienne killed three Bloody Mummers at the Whispers. Nimble Dick was killed there as well. In total four lives were taken and the blood split watered a weirwood sapling. There is a theory that Brienne will be able to save four lives (Pod, Jaime, Hyle Hunt, and herself), because she inadvertently made a blood sacrifice to the Old Gods.

I am going to have to reread that chapter.

Is there some deal I don't know where a blood sacrifice to the weirwoods means a get out of death free card?

I know there is a recurring "only death can pay for life" theme but the old gods don't seem to be the type to keep score.

If LS dares to put a finger on poor Pod I'll burst into an unstoppable rage. That's just wrong, as wrong as physically harming Hodor... pointless violence is so D&D.

To them, Pod is an enemy. He was Tyrion Lannister's squire! That must seem worse to them than all of those random Freys they hanged. They don't know his true nature like we do.

I think this theory about the Blood Sacrifice is really interesting.

In ASoS Jaquen H'ghar tells Arya

Because she saved three lives, she has taken three lives from the Red God. He says that they must be given back and that she is to name three people who will be killed to repay the debt.

So I guess this would be assuming the opposite scenario for Brienne. She has "given" four lives to the Gods and is owed them back?

But do you think Nimble Dick counts? She didn't kill him, one of the Bloody Mummers did - how come the Mummer didn't receive that "one life" from the Gods and survive his encounter with Brienne?

It is likely the former, they are keeping him and Hyle as hostages to ensure Brienne follows through on her part. They would gain nothing with Pod's death as he committed no crimes against the Starks or Tullys, or anyone in the riverlands.

I'm not saying that this theory will become canon. I have no idea what will happen. I simply find it interesting. But I would say that the theme of "only death can pay for life" seems like a universal in ASOIAF. It's all blood magic in a sense.

Making a blood sacrifice to the Old Gods used to be a common practice but it's hardly ever done anymore. Brienne gave blood to a sapling south of The Neck. I would imagine the Old Gods would be grateful. It might be all the blood they've had in some time (at least in the south).

But do you think Nimble Dick counts? She didn't kill him, one of the Bloody Mummers did

She didn't kill Nimble Dick, but she did bury his body under the tree. Maybe it counts. :dunno:

- how come the Mummer didn't receive that "one life" from the Gods and survive his encounter with Brienne?

The thing is that Shagwell would have survived had he not tried to kill Brienne. Perhaps the Old Gods favored her over the Fool who had been climbing on their branches. Also, Brienne is a friend of the North in a sense. She is on a quest to find the heir of Winterfell. She has part of Ice with her and is using it for a just cause. This may be my own bias but I figure the Old Gods would be more inclined to favor Brienne than one of the Bloody Mummers.

Wouldn't it be enough for them that Pod had been a Lannister squire? Especially Tyrion Lannisters squire? That's what I am wondering..

He is searching for Tyrion, while Brienne is searching for Sansa. The level of devotion to Brienne isn't necessarily any more than he had for Tyrion, it is just fresher with her. If Jaime does in fact wind up killing Brienne, Pod will have had a front row seat to witness exactly how the situation unfolded. I don't think it is inappropriate to think that he will realize that Jaime had no other option than to kill or be killed, and that it was a deceitful situation he was lured into, only to have that one option.

I would think it would be an honor to be a squire to a knight of the kingsguard, especially the most famous current member of the kingsguard. Moreover, Pod has an objectively better chance of finding Tyrion if he's traveling with his brother than if he were traveling with some random woman.
