It was a pretty good premiere. I'll tune in next week. I hope they don't get too heavy handed with introducing some of the iconic characters. Sometimes less is more.

I'm not sure there is very many more main characters left to introduce...

Catwoman, Bruce Wayne, Alfred, Gordon, The Penguin, Poison Ivy, and the Riddler all have made an appearance in the opening episode. Who else could the show bring in? You couldn't do the Joker in a prequel.

Yeah, I'm hoping that was more of a name-drop opening episode type thing. If they try to cram every episode with everything from the Batman universe it will get overwhelmed with plot lines that cannot have satisfying resolution. A narrow focus of a few characters with new antagonists that allow the writers to complete story arcs is a good thing, IMO.

I think following the rise of the Penguin is a good idea. Keep the focus somewhat narrow and allow characters to develop. I guess we'll see but I did like the first episode.

First half of the ep had convinced me that I wouldn't like it, but it got steadily better. The reduction in nods to the audience helped. I kinda hoped that they just had more of looking at the GCPD trying to deal with living/working in a fucking insane city, though. I'll keep watching.

Catwoman is such a random creeper.

I actually got the vibe that that comedian in the Penguin/Jada Pinkett (I can't remember her character's name) was the Joker. Or maybe I'm just reading into things.

I don't think they'll introduce the Joker at all, at least not before the S1 finale. But I expect them to have a bunch of different possible people, so that everyone's looking for him. They're all fakeouts. Or all the Joker. Or one's the Joker. Who knows? But I don't think they'd have played that hand quite so hard just yet; Joker's basically a free rating boost card they should probably hold on to.

The producers said that there will be an allusion to Joker throughout the run. Essentially, we are going to be introduced to someone who could be the Joker on a consistent basis. We might even get a core of recurring characters whom could be the Joker. I think it's a cool idea, if done right.

I'm intrigued.

Though I was distracted by the guy playing Gordon. Was it Joseph Gordon Levitt? Was it Russell Crowe playing Bud White?

I wondered if it was Joeseph Gordon Levitt and Jeremy Renner's ungodly love child.

I thought I was gonna hate it for the first 10 minutes, and it got much better. I'll be tuning in on time next week.

As a huge batman-universe fan, i was praying it wouldn't be crap...and so far it wasn't.

Good first episode, and i too thought the comedian was a young pre-joker joker. They put a lot of effort into showing him on cam/having fish moony talk to him for no reason. Either way....good episode.

Not the utter clusterfuck I was afraid of. I have say I enjoyed that much better then some of the slower Agent of SHIELD episodes.

It still suffers from Star Wars prequel syndrom though oh God we saw Bruce Wayne's mom and dad get shot agian? Where is that rolling my eyes emotocon. I'm surprised they didn't have some random guy come along shake Gordon by the shoulders and go "with great power comes great responsability"

Still if they can pull together a story line that makes sense I'd be for it.

I like the idea that there may be multiple candidates down the line for the Joker. You almost have to to keep the show compelling. It's one thing to highlight Gotham, but without the colorful characters, it's just another mob drama.

And when is this show set? Do they say? Because it felt current modern, but the cars are straight outta 1988.

I haven't seen it yet, but I was wondering the same thing and came across this quote:

Its a mash-up, to use the modern phrase, he said. If today Batman exists, then this world is the past. But its everybodys past, an 18-year-olds past and a 54-year-olds past. So in your memory, the past is all mashed up together. So in this Gotham, its a kind of timeless world. Its yesterday, its today, and its tomorrow all at the same time, because thats the world that dreams live in.

Which I guess is a bit like the Tim Burton Batman, which seemed to draw on everything between the 40's and the 80's in stylizing its Gotham City.

I thought it was good, too. A part of the direction is to show why Batman's villains become the supervillains we know, like the Penguin, or Poison Ivy. I like that.

And the end where Gordon talks to Bruce made me want to see Bruce evolve into Batman on the show.

Also that scene where Gordon and his partner are about to be butchered, was a perfect here comes Batman to the rescue, but of course there is no Batman. I also like this version of Falcone

.

Maybe. I don't know that that cane across clearly in the pilot.
