Anyone else think Stannis is destined to be the Night's King

I got into this debate with my brother, and I started to think I sounded crackpot, I was arguing that Mance couldn't be Rhaegar (lol) when I started to lay out the ground work on there being a purpose for the HBO "slip up" and dubbing of a Night's King to the general public...

in the books GRRM has a lot of time to lay out the history and the end game of the Night's King via Old Nan and other short snippets of dialogue (he came, he saw, he conquered) In the show universe they had to lay it on a little thick and I think someone slipped up and gave away the Night's King reveal, I believe the baby was shown turned to show the world it's bound to happen again and the Other's have a King and recruiting system in place...

Now I started to think about the entire theme of the series , The Game of Thrones, royal succession, the war between God's and Men and the dueling nature of Ice and Fire...

If the Other's are a Kingdom in their own right, there has to be a line of succession or at the very least a way of choosing a leader or King Ala the Wildling's and Dothraki, where they follow the strong...

I used to believe that if anyone in the story is to take on the mantle of Night's King and wear the crown of Ice it was Jon Snow, who is Dead or Dying ad far as we know! And could be brought back by Mel via The Red God?

I began my conclusion that Stannis was to be the new NK by looking past Jon's current status, albeit I may be a bit bias and Jon is to be the true King of Winter as the NK himself...

Okay so Stannis is pretty much the King at the Wall, and when he defeats Mance he's kinda seen as the defunct King beyond the Wall as well, still he's never respected as much as a "true King" would and is slowly turning into a Mad King himself, even if he masks it in nobility and claims it in done in the name of the Laws of God's and Men

IMO Stannis has already been seen as the Night's King by Mel in her visions, she sees him as a King fighting the Other's, but I believe she is confused and Stannis is the King of the Other's and that Jon is the Prince that was Promised or Azor Ahai...

This may seem a bit long winded but...

Lady Mel may be the Other Women that Stannis has fallen for and she will soon be killed and "reborn" by Ice her natural enemy in a cruel irony, she will be just beyond the Wall when Stannis returns and he'll be drawn to her/killed/crowned by the Great Other as the New Night's King (I believe the other "Other's" can be used by Jon ala Aragorn in the Return of the King, but that's another topic lol)...

I don't believe Stannis has to wield the entire Other army, just 12 Other Men of the Watch (Or anyone loyal enough to Stannis at this point to be "Wighted")...

Nope. The Night's King was s brother of the Watch and a Stark relative (allegedly). Stannis doesn't fit the bill and besides, he's the blue-eyed king with no shadow. That seems separate from the Night's King legend.

There is another guy on the Wall that's a Stark relative and sworn to the Watch, though. A blue flowe growing from a chink of ice. Hmm. And he's king... Allegedly.

I think Stannis is a fire version of the Night's King. The Nightfort is his seat, and making shadow babies with Mel can go with "when he gave her his seed he gave her his soul."

I like that idea. Is Stannis still called the Night's King?

No one in-universe calls him that. He shares some parallels: supernatural woman, Nightfort as seat, self-proclaimed king and makes sacrifices to deities. I think Day's King would be more appropriate given Stannis associates with R'hllor or fire and day compared to ice and and night with the Night's King.

I also agree that things are cyclical in GRRM's World... The roles of Lann The Clever, Bran The Builder, and the Knight's King all appear to be filled by present day characters...

Jon Snow is the only character who can possibly fill this role & I think this is why Ygrette said "An Evil Name" when she learned that Jon was the Bastard of Winterfell...

  • The Night's King is suggested to be a Stark (Jon or Benjen)
  • The Night's King was a Lord Commander of the Night's Watch (Jon)
  • The Night's King used 'strange sorceries' to bind members of the watch to his will - This can only be Warging, as Varamyr bound his wolves to his will (Jon)
  • The Night's King is supposedly romantically involved with a woman with pale white skin & blue eyes - Val has pale white skin & blue eyes when she returns with Tormund... & No, GRRM did not admit that Val's eye color was a mistake, he evaded the question... (Jon & Val seem to be growing rather close)...

So, if there is to be a Night's King, it can only be Jon Snow...

Jon Snow will be remembered as the second Night's King. Melisandre will resurrect his body, but his mind and essence will be trapped in Ghost. He'll fight the good fight as Ghost, but Melisandre will use his body as a puppet to fulfill her own goals and attempts to manifest prophecies. Thus Jon will be a hero until he fades into memory, but a large segment of future society will remember him as an asshole.

Seems the kind of shitty thing that would happen to Jon's character. The wildlings might hold him down, though.
