rondo has three heads
Could've sworn there was a thread for this last year but I only found a general, and surprisingly short, Halloween thread. October is nearly upon us and I am a total Halloween freak. Please divide your recommendations into two categories: those relating directly to Halloween or a related holiday, and stories/novels that are just generally creepy/horrific and good reads for the season. I will begin with Ray Bradbury's classic "The Halloween Tree." The writing is simple yet poetic, typical Bradbury, and you can tell the man was into the holiday. Virtually every description of the small town goes into great detail about the decorative cobwebs and various jack o lanterns, etc. It's also educational, which is a boon, and the animated adaptation is ace. MinDonner
Ooh nice thread! Can't immediately think of any decent Halloween books, but the scariest read I can think of is Dan Simmons' Summer of Night (written before he went batshit). RedEyedGhost
There's been a lot of these threads this year, I typed before going back to find links... one of the links being your own thread. Another from this year. Here's an older one, not necessarily Halloween though. This is my personal favorite of the threads. ;) I think I've settled on an extremely nice list of October reads this year, and I'm really looking forward to it:I think I've decided on the books I will read, order it TBD:The Circus of Dr. Lao by Charles G. FinneyThe Haunting of Hill House by Shirley JacksonThis Dark Earth by John Horner JacobsPet Sematary by Stephen KingLast Days by Adam NevillThe Night Country by Stewart O'NanAlthough I do know I will cap the month with The Grey King by Susan Cooper. If there's time, and that's a big if, my extra book will be Ghost Story by Peter Straub. Thanks for the help everybody  I'm really looking forward to this again! These are the books I read last October:The Devil You Know by Mike Carey Salem's Lot by Stephen KingThe Sorcerer's House by Gene WolfeOctober Country by Ray BradburyThe Ritual by Adam NevillDark Harvest by Norman Partridge It was probably the most fun I've had of reading in any single one month ever. Haha you are so right I forgot I started that and for some reason it didn't come up when I searched....maybe they can be merged. I read Summer of Night last year..it seems like the type of novel I'd really like, horror+small town kids, but it was not doing it for me. Extremely slow. Perhaps I will need to try it again. I just finished The Martian Chronicles so maybe I'll begin with October Country
Rooster
One book I couldn't CTRL+F even in REG's linked threads is Roger Zelazny's A Night in the Lonesome October. It's practically tailor-made to be read in October. Good fun.
