Have you ever been as fanatical about any books as much as ASOIAF?

Have you ever been as fanatical about any books as much as ASOIAF? Has any other book/series inspired you to spend as much time on forums, parsing hidden meanings and missed innuendos? What other fictional literature has led you to such extreme diagnosis and debate about meaning, plot, and character?

I do love quite a few books and if you asked me 5 years ago what my favorite book was i would tell you either Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. But asoiaf is totally different, mostly due to all the drama. Another reason that we all love the books is coz of the waiting time between each book, ie with each passing year we re-read all the books again and love it more each time as well as come up with more crackpot theories.

So no i have never been so fanatical about any other book nor will i ever be XD

Great question. Yes I have, it started when I was 13 and we were assigned Hound of the Baskervilles in school and I just fell in love with the whole Sherlock Holmes series. Also the two mentioned above, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter (still), Stephen King Dark Tower series and Susan Cooper (young adult) The Dark is Rising series.

None have been more exciting than this series for me though, I think I will be rereading these books for years to come and still finding new things-and there's still two more to go so even more new things to come.

I also have to say this is one of the best book forums I've ever been on as well!

Only Cat Harry

I mean, there are many, many, books I like more than asoiaf, but none of them lend themselves to such great internet discussion as this series

Harry Potter. Yes it's true.

And I must say. Even thought the Harry Potter books are extremely intelligent and thought provoking, Harry Potter fandom is stupid.

This fandom is much less stupid. Maybe because we're mostly grownups.

Holy crap, you're right. The shipping wars were legion. But some of the crackpot theories back in the day remind me of here, like the "McGonagall is a Death Eater" theory

Completely agree. And we only had 1 year waits in between the books for that one. Had we had longer, I bet we would have seen crackpots about Harry really being Snape's son, Scrimgeour being Voldemort's disguise, and Dudley being a secret wizard.

For me, it's about timing; if we'd had an Internet and forums like this for LOTR when I was a young teen in the '70s, you'd probably have to drag me out of such forums kicking and screaming. As it was, I had to read, parse, and ponder the stories on my own. Sharing the fanaticism does increase the passion, sort of like rooting for a team from the stands instead of alone on a couch at home watching on TV.

All of those did exist, for reals! Well, I think it was that Scrimgeour was Imperioused by Voldy, but still. Harry being Snape son was particularly resilient, no matter how many times per book characters remarked how alike Harry and James looked :dunno:

Oy. If only James had a sibling, then we could have explained his looks but still given him different parentage. Any other character have green eyes? Secret Evans!

ASoIaF is a unique series of books, hard to compare it to other works, even in the Fantasy genre because of its rejection of standard hero and villain roles. It's one of my favorites because of all the subplots, unstated facts, and offbeat characters, among other things.

I do have other favorites, though. Turtledove's Darkness series is a great read, though not nearly the literary work. Vance's Demon Princes and Lyonesse books are also among my favorites.
