Ned or Tywin: Who was truly worse for their families?

Simple enough question

I'm going to say Ned; he left his house in complete disrepair due to his own stupidity. Bearing in mind that abusing one child (who he subsequently goes to war for) shouldn't outweigh the sterling position the Lannisters were left in after Tywin died (just as abruptly as Ned died so the circumstances are similar enough). And the Lannisters do enjoy a vastly higher quality of life than the Starks thanks to the firm foundation of power Tywin established

Jesus, so we are now ignoring the child abuse for "stellar" results of Lannister family?

Stellar, in this situation means:

1. One member is a kinslayer accused for a crime he didn't commit and which ultimately led to a family feud that won't end nicely

2. A luck has changed and Lannisters have been struck at the peak of their power in the very core.

3. Tywin left his lands without an heir, a kingdom in chaos, daughter who is complete nutshell

Stellar my...

He left his House in complete disarray and all of his work has proven to be epic failure.

Huh?

Ned's death marked a downward spiral for House Stark, sure. There is hope for the Starks yet, though; with Rickon being a possible candidate for KitN or the Lord of Winterfell, and with a nearly immortal Bran possessing magical powers, Sansa and Arya still being around to cause whatever mischief they're gonna cause in the future, etc. Surely, they aren't in a good situation, but is it really Ned's fault? Ned was STUPID and so doomed his House to utter defeat forever and ever? He found out Robert's heirs were Lannisters born of incest, for God's sake, and he even confessed to the crime so that his daughters might have been saved. He was STUPID? He didn't even want to go to KL in the first place.

And the Lannisters are in a good position?!

I think you have made some ciritcal mistakes in your reading, no offense. Mladen pointed it out well, but also;

With Tywin's death, the Tyrells are poised to take over King's Landing, de facto or de jure, any moment now. Some distant Lannister cousin has been left to inherent Casterly Rock. Tyrion is currently in the midst of roiling bloodshed a continent away, almost dying a couple of times on the way there. Jaime lost his hand, perhaps soon his power, and might just be getting killed by Lady Stoneheart. Cersei has always been a total nutjob, and the realm has been left in her hands; there's no end to the crazy, stupid things she's done. Joffery's dead, and it will take a decade until Tommen comes of a decent age to rule by himself, Myrcella is stuck in Dorne with one ear and might be the crux of another civil war. Kevan, the last person who may have been able to salvage House Lannister, got shot by Varys, and Lancel has turned to a life of piety, unconcerned now with his House. The Lannisters are not looking good here.

Tywin - even though he secure the family's dynasty and reputation and made them clear victors in the sight of the people, that was during his generation. Instead, he is pretty shit father who has left fucked-up (emotionally and mentally) children to take up his Lannister legacy. Plus, he would not even help the Wall against the wildlings because he thought that would distrupt Robb and Balon's kingdoms. Negate Tywin from the Lannisters and the House will slowly begin to crumple into itself. Who's left to seriously take charge - The Dwarf, the Cripple, and the Mad Queen. He was a horrible father to his children and a hypocrite to boot.

Ned may have done stupid things, but at least he tried his best. He ruled the North well enough that the northerners love the NED :), and his children seem to e honourable, dutiful and loyal people, at least at their inner-core. (maybe Arya will escape that, but certainly not Jon, Bran and Rickon and the late Robb). The people in the North love him, but he will behead a traitor in a heartbeat. Though he extremely shit politically, I can sy that. He should have betrothed his children earlier, and fostered them at least around the North to build up relations. Keep Robb and Jon and Rickon at Winterfell while Arya, Sansa and Bran head off to foster with others.

Ned did not leave his house in complete despair. Ned was in a tough spot, and the only thing he did was get himself killed.

The Starks were well respected in the north. He left a stable government there with all his heirs safely in Winterfell and their mother as a trusted and capable adviser to them.

He did make arrangement to get his daughters smuggled out but failed, leaving Sansa at the hands of the Lannister, but a single hostage doesn't leave a house in tatters.

It was Robb and Cat who took it from there into the current situation.

Tywin on the other hand started the story in an excellent spot (after many years of hard work).

He was the most powerful lord in the 7 kingdoms, father in law for the king, lots of influence.

He managed to loose both his heirs (due to his own actions) , leave an unstable daughter to lead the kingdom, gain the enmity of all other lords.

And in his case it was actually his son that brought on the most important alliance.

The answer will always be the guy who was killed by his own son while taking a shit.

 Tywin didn't shit gold after all.

Would you rather have Eddard as a father or Tywin? That is your answer.

Ned for sure. I may be somewhat of a Tywin fan around here, but he's more of a favorite villain. As much as I love reading about him, I would never want him as a boss and definitely not as a father!
