PrinceHenryris
I'm of the opinion that Direwolves, similar to Dragons, are magickal creatures. Does that mean.A quick internet search said that a Gray Wolf's typical lifespan is 6 to 8 years, with 13 being at the upper end.I really don't know much about wolves, but I do know a little bit about dogs. Small dogs generally live longer than big dogs. Pomeranians can live past 20 while a Rottweiller who makes it past 10 is an oddity. So how long do these mammoth dogs last? The grey wolf is the closest living relative, so I would go for that life span.
Kienn
I would guess 50 years so all those ancient Starks are able to grow up with the wolves they "married".
Dr. Pepper
Their life spans are variable and are intricately tied to their ability to keep sharp, pointy things away from their necks.
Brandon the warg
I think like dragons, children of the forest and other magical creatures in the series(and hopefully kraken and large eagle-like birds) , direwolves would have very long lifespans.....jus like he dragons.... Ghost's Shadow
Direwolves being bound to humans could give them a longer life, if they stayed away from pointy things, indeed. It's a magical fantasy world, so perhaps using real life wolves for a comparison isn't the best, but what else do we have until we're told otherwise. ChillyPolly
Dire Wolves actually existed a long ass time ago. The grey wolf is the closest living relative, so I would go for that life span. The Pre-Historic Dire Wolves have no relationship to the Dire Wolves of fiction. Tolkien used the term "Wargs" to refer to extra-large, supernatural, demonic wolves. The Dungeons & Dragons game adapted this to "Worgs". They then changed the name from "Worgs" to "Dire Wolves" in later editions. They did not want to make it look like they were copying Tolkien. Since then, the use of "Dire Wolves" to refer to a Warg-like monster or giant wolf, without seeming to copy Tolkien and with a superficial pretense of prehistoric inspiration, has become a sort of Fantasy tradition. But really, "Dire Wolves" of fantasy have nothing to do with the the Dire Wolves of prehistory. Of course Tolkien never invented the word "Warg" or the concept of a giant monster wolf or werewolf to begin with. So its really all about avoiding the public perception of imitation. Lion Of The Night
They live as long as they are alive..... The fact is they are a mythical, magical creature. We could take the pragmatic aproach and say well because they are like a regular wolf they must live 8 to 15 years. But thats like saying well a dragon is like a dinosaur so they have the same lifespan.... That doesn't work. In the end a dire wolf will live exactly as long as GRRM wants them too. Brandon the warg
I AGREE...THEY LIVE AS LONG AS GRRM WANTS THEM TO LIVE......BUT HOPEFULLY LONGER THAN 8-15 YEARS....
