The traveling Others

Cotter Pyke's letter to LC Jon Snow said that wights were in the water. I suspect they are/will travel south in order to attack other regions. Especially since so many are preoccupied with the wars that are still raging. What are some theories or ides on if/how they will gather a large force south of the Wall without crossing it?

I red a theory that the Wall will fall, becouse someone will blow the Horn of Winter (many people think that it is the horn which Jon found at the Fist of the Fitst Men). This may be the way how Others will atack Westerors.

I was thinking they may be able to walk on the sea floor and get around the wall (before it falls). Patchface sings about what's going on under the sea frequently and there seems to be prophecy in his tunes. That would put wights on both sides of the NW. Also, the slave ships that picked up the wildlings from Hardhome could be unknowingly delivering wights to Essos.

I think a huge number of others will turn up in skagos at the same time as davos. Leading to some super exciting scenes that force rickon/osha/every able bodied skagosi and their unicorns to all flee. either straight to the mainland somehow or maybe to skane first.

On skane they quickly work under the guidance of davos to repair the wrecked ships that have been sneakily mentioned once or twice and high tail it out of there for winterfell to meet up with their fellow cannibals (frey pies) and kick some ass!

I like the idea of Davos having to fight his way through Others and wights to get to Rickon and flee with him. And then him having to oversee their ship repairs is great. Nice catch on the sneaky ship references. Since WF is landlocked and there's no port I assume they'll have to go to White Harbor first. think some wights will be returning with them. I don't think he'll get all that accomplished by the end of WoW so maybe some of it will spill into ADoS?

Perhaps they have been there the whole time... Not strong enough to get out except upon very misty places as where JonCon got infected, or Shireen.

I read a few thoughts that the Others/wights/greyscale are connected but I haven't read any true theories. I wasn't sure if it is just a feeling or if there's any suggestive text. I like the idea of the connection. And if that's the case they are already everywhere. Dun, dun, dunnnnn

Well there has to be a challenge. Right now they are all just at one place, grouped together, waiting for a dragon to come and burn them. You don't even need three dragons, one will suffice.

It's like Harry Potter, you have all those books and you think it is just finishing up Voldemort. Then the sixth book arrives, bam horcruxes, complete new storyline. You think well that's it, but then next book, bam hallowes, complete new storyline. And all the seeds were there, right under our nose. The similar wand, the cloak, the diary, ...

I have a feeling we can only see the top of the iceberg (again) and WOW is going to be our Half Blood Prince. Prepare to be amazed, but I would be very surprised if all the clues aren't already there but we just can't see.

That's not what he says. He says "dead things in the water". He knows what wights are, so I suppose he could have said exactly that to Jon, but his words are ambiguous. "Dead things in the water" could be 1) indeed, wights, 2) corpses (humans or animals) floating around 3) some strange wight beast. Personally, I think it's #2.

Yep. Me and AntZ/Paper Waver kinda thing that. In my case, I haven't yet found a link (not that I have actually looked for it), but I suppose that it must be something. For instance, there is Duck's story about the Shrouded Lord that sounds like the Night's King.

If you think about it, the Ironborn have actually accidentally created a wight army by always throwing the men they kill overboard...

Good catch. If indeed Cotter sees wights there, then it's probably dead ironborn.

I took "dead things" to be wights. I figured if it was just corpses from the ships or animals he would have said that. But, I could be wrong. Do we ever learn what exactly must happen to create a wight? If it's only death by another wight or an Other how could they become wights by being given to the Drowned God?

I always thought any dead body can become wight if there are Others around. I guess if you kill an Other his all army of wights will collapse.

I think so as well, "the cold" revives them.

About the dead things, Cotter looked rather worried so I guess he was suffering an attack of some sort. Or perhaps what he found at Hardhome was a city full of dead things and since they were surrounded, he needed help :dunno:

I definitely took "dead things in the water" to mean wights, and even pictured a number of Myth, The Fallen Lords scenes. In game they would occasionally come waltzing out of bodies of water since they were already dead.

Starting 2:52 in this video came to mind. Makes me miss those games...

'...dead THINGS in the water...'

My interpretation varies from the pack on this a bit. I suspect that Pike is one of many that have doubted the veracity of the stories from their brothers about what happened at the Fist of Men. Pike is proud enough to NOT want to be seen as one of those that prattles on about myths. He's probably said unkind things of those brothers. Saying "dead things" was his way of stating what he had seen without going so far as to call them wights. I wouldn't be surprised if he dies by wights, disbelieving in their existence until doing so is pointless. Such pride is oft chiseled in stone. The only way to erase it requires breaking the stone.

At the risk of digressing...

... What do you think about the belief in the existence of the ancient enemy amongst the NW? Universal? Half-in-half? Most those BC, minorities at ST and EW?

I agree. I think it's any dead body that hasn't been burned.

And that's a cool idea about the connection between a wight and his "master."

I recently finished a re-read of the series and i really think the drowned god is a "demon." The rituals create a potential army of wights, they're the only peoples of Westeros that practiced a form of slavery, at least in relatively recent memory, the words reference the dead and resurrection.
