How my brother exposed a racist

Warning: story contains profanity.

Last July, my two brothers and I were on vacation in the USA. We were in Miami, Florida and it was our last night in the States before flying back to Europe and I continued on to Indonesia. Since it was our last night, we decided to go to a nightclub.

My middle brother thought it a great idea to get drunk before getting into any nightclub. He filled a water bottle with vodka to disguise the liquid and mixed more vodka with a bottle of Coca Cola. My little brother and I did not want to get drunk until we were at least in a club. So my middle brother consumed all the alcohol and got super drunk. Turned out that was not such a bright idea.

We went around town looking for one of at least 3 nightclubs that some locals had recommended a few days ago. They were far apart and one had a queue that was too long and another we were turned away because of the dress code. During this time my middle brother made a complete ass of himself (my little brother filmed it) because he was drunk. After hours of walking around town we gave up and settled for a bar where my brothers smoked water pipes (I don’t smoke). I just had one beer.

We then decided to see what the beach was like at night. As we walked to the beach, we passed by the nightclub that had turned us away and a group of women were leaving. My middle brother started chatting with one of them. I thought that this might get ugly as girls don’t like sloppy drunk men. So I walked further ahead with my little brother. It did get ugly. But not in the way I expected.

The women were walking in the same direction as us and my middle brother was still talking to one of them. I then heard a woman shouting angrily. I looked back and noticed it was one of the women in that group. A tall lady in a black dress and a gap between her front teeth. She was telling another girl to “Shut the f**k up” and then told her to “Stop talking to the crack smoker!”. She was referring to my middle brother. My middle brother denied her accusation and she shouted back “Yeah you are, you a crack smoker!” She continued to shout a wide range of insults and profanities. Another girl apologized for her friend’s conduct and said she was having a bad day (obviously!).

I then tried to apologize for my brother. I turned around and to nobody in particular I said “Sorry, he’s really really drunk!” Then the woman who was shouting and being really mean to everyone directed her venom at me. She says to me: “You don’t need to say anything! You can’t afford to buy a shirt that fits you! That shirt does not even fit into your f**king pants!” Slightly tipsy from alcohol, I did not fully process what she said and I said: “So you want me to un-tuck my shirt?” She replies: “No I want you to buy a shirt that f**king fits you!” (I was borrowing my Dad’s shirt which is a couple of sizes larger than mine as all of my shirts were dirty. Dad stayed in the hotel room by the way) and I say “Yeah and I want you to shut up” And she says: “I’m not going to shut up. I don’t need to listen to you. You’re poor!” Then I say: “No you’re poor!” And there was a brief back and forth between us over who is poor. (I should have remembered Monty Python’s French Taunter so I could be verbally armed for any battle of insults)

The whole time we were walking. I decided to not waste any more time with this loud mouth American and I walked further ahead. My middle brother meanwhile was still chatting with the other girl. The one who was spewing verbal venom then calls him a crack smoker again and starts calling my brother the N word. She keeps shouting the N word and her friends urge her to calm down but she keeps calling my brother the N word. And that was perfect timing. Because walking in the opposite direction were a group of black women. I passed by them and looked back to see them run to that racist bitch and shout “HEY!” I burst out laughing and shouted “BUSTED! BUSTED!”

I did not see what happened when the racist woman was confronted by the black women. As I was laughing with my little brother, my middle brother caught up with us (alone now) and told me that the racist had “ran away with her tail between her legs” when confronted. Anyway, afterwards we made it to the beach and my middle brother drunk as he was interrupted a couple of people kissing in the dark! Finally we made it back to the hotel. And that was our amusing night in Miami!

Quite the story. Sadly, such things happen.

In South Africa we have the K word in place of the American N word. One day while I was jaywalking this guy leaned out of his car and called me the K word. He supplemented it with "bloody" and "stupid". I admit I was in the wrong but I don't think breaking the road rules had anything to do with my skin colour. Anyway, I've become emotionally impervious to such insults so it didn't bother me. Bit it certainly worries me that such people exist, unashamedly so. My sister is both black and female, so you can imagine the shit she goes through. I guess that's one of the reasons I've become impervious. At least with me there's the advantage of male privilege.

This woman certainly ended up making racist remarks -- but if I may play devil's advocate, why did you give her a pass on her classism? Her use of the word "poor" as a pejorative is just as bad to me as her racial slurs, and instead of calling her on that you used that word right back at her as a pejorative.

Why is it more acceptable to insult people on the base of class than race?

"I don't need to listen to you, you're poor" is just about the most prejudiced classist statement anyone could make.

I also was expecting some kind of undercover work.

No harm, no foul. And don't worry, I'm sure gap-toothed girl can't be racist because she has a ton of black friends.

The saddest part of this story is actually the night out on the town.

Somewhere, gaptooth lady is telling her friends the story about how she ran off a bunch of poor foreign terrorists who were looking to target a nightclub.

Damnit. Ninja'd.

All I got from this is that the south still sucks, this dudes brother can't handle his booze, he apparently dislikes Americans, and he thinks it's not right (rightly so) to say bad shit about someone's race, but it's completely acceptable to bag on someone's financial lot in life.

I'm also going to start running around yelling 'ha! Got you! Busted!' To random strangers.

I will also preface every post with, 'this post contains fucking profanity'

I was shocked at her behavior in public not expecting such conduct from anyone especially a woman. I was unprepared for any verbal battle as I said. So I just threw back the first insult I heard.

I was not thinking of classism at the time. In hindsight, I admit I should have. If I had I might have said: "Poor?! So you must suck Republican d**k!" Then again, I know better than to verbally or physically attack women.

All I though about was: "What the hell is wrong with this woman?"

This post contains fucking profanity:

'Especially a woman'. You're right. They should know their place, the fairer sex shouldn't have dark opinions, or engage in verbal battles, or in anyway be insulting. Silly girl.

You're fucking hilarious man.

We're probably gonna get a thread called 'How my half-robot sister exposed an orange' next.. the orange was an apple!

Yeah I didn't get the whole point either.

And why is it more shocking not to expect this conduct 'especially from a woman'??? I kinda get peter's point here... assuming that was sarcasm because that's how it looked to me

Are we all supposed to be fricky frolicky wading in the flowers in the meadow without a single bad letter leaving our mouth? Blimey
