About Arya Stark's betrothal...

Yeah so this is my first post on this website.

Well let's get straight to the point.

In Clash of kings during the Harrenhal chapters. Arya stark meets Elmar Frey who is obviously the boy who she is betrothed to.

He tells her that his wedding has been called of because his family was dishonored. I think at this point Robb stark has not married Jeyne. Then what is all the fuss about the dishonor thing. I mean we discover about his marriage in storm of swords. If this wasn't the marriage, what dishonor is Elmar talking about?

If it is the marriage indeed please clarify my doubts about the timeline.

So that means the marriage happened before the battle of blackwater bay? And basically everyone knows about it except catelyn?

Well, Edmure was sort of angry with her sister due the whole "Hey, let's release the Kingslayer" thing. In fact, Catelyn sees the Frey leaving from her father's window, but none tells her why.

Also, Arya is so incredibly oblivious when it comes to herself :drunk: I mean, Elmar says he's marrying a princess. Now, Arya, think, which princess is he marrying? It's not Myrcella, there is no alliance with Dorne and Stannis, leaving the options to either Sansa or herself. But no, she doesn't even think about either her or Sansa.

And later on, before the fight at the Inn, she hears Ramsay is marrying Sansa's sister and she think "Sansa doesn't have another sister"

Oh yeah I always wondered about the Freys leaving Riverrun. So, this was the reason. Robb fucked up big time.

But why doesn't anyone tell poor Cat about it? And basically the readers don't know about it because cat doesn't know.

If I remember correctly, Cat did see some Freys leaving pissed off at Riverrun, but I think that was in aSoS

So yeah, readers of aCoK only know Robb did something bad to offend the Freys, but I don't think there was any mention of the marriage until aSoS

But hold the horses! OMG, I just realized something for the first time: Arya, real or fake, wasn't available to marry Ramsay because she was betrothed to Elmar! That means Walder could have had the North but Tywin took him from him and gave it to the Boltons. Man, that had to sting!

Oh that is an interesting point. Saying "Serves him right" will be an understatement.

In fact, now that I remember, the Tyrells had their sights on the North as well and Tywin scorned them too.

The ultimate irony is that Tywin probably thought the Boltons were the best choice to hold the North since they were actually northerners, but I think the lords of the North would have welcomed more a Tyrell, or hell, even a Frey better. At least they don't flay people

As for Timeline issue. IIRC Martin tells us in ASOS Timeline Corollary or something like that, that earlier chapters of ASOS { non KL POVs} are, running almost concurrently as last ACOK chapters, which were heavily peppered by Sansa Tyrion chapters.

As for Catelyn not knowing but Freys at Harrenhal knowing, remember Robb had some Freys with him too{ Stevron, who died at Oxcross}. They most probably shot off their Ravens to Harrenhal and Riverrun. Catelyn sees Freys leaving { Trampling Direwolf banner in process} but doesnt know the reason because she was confined to Hoster's chambers for releasing Jaime Lannister.

Not anymore. Remember Elmar told us he wasn't going to marry his princess after all. Clearly the betrothal was off.

But yeah Old Walder probably wasn't too thrilled with the Boltons getting that reward when it was HIS castle that had to be cleaned afterwards (can't be easy scrubbing bloodstains out of stone), and HIS house that took the blame. I'm finally seeing an up-side to all of this. :D

Yeah, that means Walder was pissed when Robb broke his own betrothal and so he broke Elmar's in return, but then it came back to bite him in the ass when Roose jumped on the newly available Arya Stark. Ugh, if the choice of Lord of Winterfell was between Ramsay and Elmar, I would choose Elmar in a second (and I bet other northerners would too)
