Houses descended from other houses

Recommended Posts

From the books there's Durrendon -> Baratheon, Stark -> Karstark and Gardener -> Florent and Tyrell. I've been trying to find more by looking through sigils. Apologies if this thread has been done many times before.

Some are obvious from looking at sigils, like Baratheon/Durrendon -> Wensington and Bolling (bastard), Gardener -> Chester, Uffering, and Oldflowers (bastard), but are there any others? Perhaps the Mootons are related to the Tullys as both have a fish, or Baratheon/Durrendon to Buckwell or Harte due to the stag connection.

Well obviously Targaryen->Blackfyre

Oakheart and Rowan also claim descendant from the Gardeners

Starks also led to the Greystarks, who have since been extinguished.

There's a possible connection between House Reyne and Vikary, based on sigils.

The OP confuses me, are you suggesting that somehow the Gardeners were descendants of the Baratheons? Because that literally can't be. Its possible they descended from the Durendons, but that seems impractical as well.

I didn't suggest anything like that. Merely that it's likely the Baratheons have Houses Bolling and Wensington descended from them based on sigils. Similar evidence shows Chester, Uffering and Oldflowers descended from the Gardeners.

Do similar sigils imply descent though? They could just as easily reflect a shared culture or simple imitation.

I suppose it is possible, though I doubt any house would like a group of unrelated people to rip off their sigil. Remember that Garlan created a sigil for his new house with two Tyrell roses and the same logic would suggest that Wensington's three stags come from a third son of a Durrendon/Baratheon. But not definite I guess.

Reversing colours and putting a red bend sinister have obvious bastard connotations though.

House frey > house frey of riverrun

House lannister > house lannister of darry.

We se these connections be made just within the story. IMO this has happened tons of times before, with a "halfnew" house taking up the mantle of an old one
