Bad planning by D&D. They should've featured him less in season 3/4 and stretched his journey out more. Now they're faced with the possibility of casual viewers and non-book readers wondering who the fudge Bran is 18 months from now.

I believe Bran will be a huge player towards the end and they've decided to bench one of the main characters for a season. Of all the decisions D&D have so far, this is by far the most disappointing.

I don't think you could have stretched his journey in season 3. His travels need to coincide with Jon and Sam. Jon's arc alone requires enough screen time that it supercedes Bran's Arc. As for season 4, it sounds like they already stretched his journey by making the detour to Craster's Keep. Even then he was only in a few episodes.

While they won't show him, references made be made to him, so he is still in the veiwers minds.

It's a matter of time before they did this with Bran I think. It's not shocking at all. It's not D&D's planning that is the fault. If anything they tried to stretch Bran's as much as they were allowed. I mean he met Jojen in Season 3, left Osha and Rickon by the end of it, and even put him through some trouble with the incident at Craster's in S4. If you ask me they did all they could to avoid his absense. If anyone's to blame it's George himself for not writing enough material for him to be adapted.

Nontheless, I think it'll be a cool revelation for viewers when he contacts Theon through the weirwood tree in Winterfell.

I understand they needed Bran et al to be at The Nightfort to meet Sam at the end of S3 but the rest of the Sam/Jon arcs that coincided with Bran's storylines were pointless and weren't even in the book (like the Craster's Keep scene and the whole fact Jon knew Bran was north of the wall). His journey from the wall to BR was heavily rushed and didn't anywhere near reflect his perilous journey from the books. He didn't battle starvation, the temptation to feast on flesh through Summer etc. They could easily have stretch his journey out by introducing Coldhands!

This is devastating to me. After that finale scene we won't see him for almost 2 years from the time that scene aired?

Exactly and as I said earlier, the casual viewers and non-book readers might be confused 18 months from now wondering who this kid is. D&D will have to find a way to refresh our memories

Wonder why they couldn't have him in 2 or 3 episodes searching the wire net and all. Might have to do with those cut backs that they are making as well though.

Or they could've shot scenes of him exploring the caves, addressing his infatuation with Meera or eating that paste stuff?

No one is going to 'forget' who Bran is. Did any readers forget who he was in the last three books where he was barely mentioned at all? Of course they didn't. He was thrown off the tower in the very first episode and crippled after that, and can control animals (and humans) with his mind. It's not like anyone will 'forget' him.

Book readers will certainly not forget who Bran is, but not everyone who watches the show have read the books. You have to remember there are a lot of casual viewers who may forget especially when you consider it'll be 2 years before he reappears

Casual viewers forget people like Ramsay, Barristan, Jorah, Bronn, Thorne, etc. They DON'T forget Jon, Dany, Tyrion, or any of the Stark children, because they are our 'main' characters that the story follows. I was a casual viewer myself for 2 seasons before I read the books, so I know very well which characters stand out and which don't. No one is going to forget Bran.

Personally, I don't see why people are blaming the showrunners for something that was clearly the fault of Martin. He didn't write enough for Bran. That's the long and the short of it. Bran has 7 chapters in the last three books...there's not much that D&D can do about that. They've fluffed out Bran's storyline by giving him a run-in at Craster's Keep, but they can't keep fluffing his storyline once he's caught up to where he's supposed to be. I put the blame for Bran's lack of story directly on Martin, because that's where it belongs.

With all due respect, just because you remember certain characters doesn't mean every other casual viewer will. Besides Ramsay, Barristan, Jorah, Bronn, Thorne weren't absent for 2 years.

And with all due respect, you're acting as if tv viewers are too dumb to remember one of the main characters if he's gone for 10 episodes. Bran won't be absent for '2 years'...he'll be gone for one season. I WAS a casual viewer for 2 years, and while the minor characters were confusing, the main characters most certainly were not.

Oh, and Thorne WAS absent for 2 years, actually. He left in season 1 and didn't return until season 4.

Yes Bran will be absent for two years when you consider his last appearance in S4 and his reappearance in S6. It's approximately 2 years!

I'm not claiming all TV viewers are dumb but generally, those who haven't read the books may have trouble keeping track of all the characters since there are a heck of a lot.

"One season" or "10 episodes" isn't enough to forget a main character.

TV viewers have trouble with the minor characters. They don't have trouble with the main characters. I'm surrounded by people who watch the show but haven't read the books. They ask me about minor characters...they don't ask about main characters.
