Robert and Lyanna

What does Robert actually think Lyanna died of? What did Ned tell him? We don't actually know for sure ourselves but let's assume she died in childbirth to follow the most popular theory. Ned obviously could not tell Robert this. Did Robert ever see her body? If she died in childbirth she would have no real visible marks on her (I think?), so perhaps Ned told Robert Rhaegar strangled her, or something. I have no clue.

Also, if Robert believed Rhaegar killed her ( which I think he does) then how did Ned explain the presense of the 3 Kingsguard at the Tower of Joy? "They were guarding her corpse, and oh yeah, here's my bastard son, totally has nothing to do with that". He thinks Rhaegar raped her and then killed her, so why would he have 3 of his Kingsguard protect her supposed corpse, instead of having 3 of the best fighters in the realm, one of which is SER ARTHUR FREAKING DAYNE, who is also his best friend, at his side during the battle of the Trident.

I know Robert isn't the brightest, but he's not utterly stupid either, he should've seen there was something that didn't quite add up.

After being transported for three months during summer, Robert would definitely not notice any marks.

Especially since she was a skeleton before Ned even put her in a box to be shipped northwards.

I think when he went to Starfall to return Dawn he probably would have had her remains prepared by the silent sisters. Barristan talks about them either boiling or using beetles to strip the bones when discussing Quentyn's remains.

As for what he told Robert, it's probably not hard to sell someone dying of a fever or some other illness picked up while being held captive.

I suppose I didn't think about how long it would take to transport her. Woe is me!

Should've thought about that a bit better.

Still the whole presence of the Kingsguard there even after Rhaegar fell on the Trident should've been suspicious to Robert.

I have always found it strange that no one ever brings up how Aurther Dayne died. I think the only time there's a specific reference is in Ned's dream.

I guess what I'm really asking is: Am I missing something about the whole situation, or are we supposed to accept that Robert believed the whole story, which is without a doubt dubious, without a single suspicion, so that the great plot of "J= L + R" might happen?

Robert doesn't think that Rhaegar killed her, just that he kidnapped her and raped her. He is not a complete idiot, he knows that he had killed Rhaegar before she died.

Is not the official story that she died of a fever ? Well that must be what Ned told everyone. He doesn't like to lie. So he would still tell the truth that way (Lyanna probably died of a puerpueral fever) and omitt all the rest.

Robert doesn't think.

:lol:

Oh that mean to say that. He can at least process some simple thoughts like : hot girl ---> sex

Cersei ---> bitch

Ned ---> friend (most of the time)

Rhaegar ---> EVIL

Targs ---> dragonspawn ---> warhammer

Hmm that would make sense I guess, but I don't think it's mentioned anywhere what Ned actually told people. On her wiki page it does say that she died because "A fever had taken her strength".

wine -> drink

ugly girl -> drink, then sex

boar -> kill

my kids -> ignore

other kids -> maybe mine, ignore too.

Nobody knows any KG were at ToJ. Nobody knows about ToJ, period. (Apart from the very few participants that is, of course).

1. Ned went somewhere from Storms End and found Lyanna dead or dying.

2. While he was away he must have encountered Arthur Dayne somewhere, or his body, because he acquired the sword Dawn.

3. Ned turned up at Starfall with Dawn.

4. Ned had Lyanna's bones sent back to Winterfell.

5. Ned had his bastard sent to Winterfell.

6. Arthur Dayne hadn't been seen since before the war.

7. Neither had Ser Oswell Whent

8. LC Hightower was last seen mid-war, sent from KL to find Rhaegar.

These are all the facts that anyone knows. Ned would tell little or nothing more, because its dangerous to his secret. He most likely told Robert that he Lyanna died of a fever (true) and no more. 8 above has nothin to do with Lyanna, 7 and 6 neither. 3 is obviously connected to 6 somehow, but has no connection to Lyanna either. 5 is more connected to 3 than Lyanna.

Its really quite simple. Ned is not an explainer, and Robert doesn't need explanations. Most 'gaps' in the narrative are easily (but wrongly) filled in by each character themselves as several different natural, naturally simultaneous, and ever so slightly interlocking, event lines. Neds bastard, Dawn, and Lyanna. None of them need be related.

Well okay, thanks :)
