Historic foreshadowing / history repeating itself

There is a lot of this in The World of Ice and Fire. Lets compile a list?

Off the top of my head:

-Boltons Burning Winterfell

-The Hour of the Wolf is similar to Ned's time in King's Landing had things gone better for him.

-I get the general impression the book is hinting that Euron will face rebellion in the Iron Isles.

The story about the Long Night coming to Yi Ti after a succession battle between a sister and brother over the throne seems like a hint about what's coming vis a vis the Long Night and the upcoming Dance.

I'm almost done with the Ironborn part but so far I got:

Daeron I reminded me of Aegon in a particular scene.

"His lords reminded him that, unlike the Conqueror and his sisters, he had no more dragons fit for war. To this Dareon famously responded: "You have a dragon. He stands before you."

ADWD:

"And then Prince Aegon spoke. "Then put your hope on me," he said. "Daenerys is Prince Rhaegar's sister, but I am Rhagaer's son. I am the only dragon that you need."

^And naturally he was being pressed for Dany because of her dragons.

Another one is that sometimes the history repeating itself goes the opposite way.

"Joron I Blacktyde captured Gyles II Gardener when their fleets crashed off the Misty Islands. After torturing him to death, Joron had his corpse cut into pieces so that he might bait his fishhooks with "a chunk of king.""

^This puts what Euron did to Baelor Blacktyde into perspective.

Speaking of Euron an Ironland king, Qhored, sacked Oldtown. That's been a theory on the forums. Euron seems to have his cruelty. Also, the Red Kraken had a ton of kids with salt wives but no kids with a rock wife to succeed him which I could see happening.

Before there were those that liked the idea of SR being the current Ronnel but that little lord had a bad end that ended in kinslaying. Plus, some liked the idea that Sansa would be Sharra but we have Aegon passing on her albeit the reasons obviously wouldn't apply to her but there could be different ones.

It's not really a repeat but I thought it was interesting that Forrest Frey's widow met Arya's description considering the Elmar and Arya bethrothal.

"His widow, Lady Sabitha of House Vypren, proved redoubtable for her courage and notorious for her lack of mercy. According to Mushroom, she was a "sharp-featured, sharp-tongued harridan of House Vypren, who would sooner ride than dance, wore mail instead of silk, was fond of killing men and kissing women."

Except that she wears leather instead of silk and the last part is N/A so far but a Frey almost had a wife like Sabitha again.

ETA: These are observations made already with Princess and the Queen but the dead Visenya also fits Arya's description with the hole where the heart was supposed to be but I'm not sure what could be implied from that. & Aurane Waters seems to be like Daemon with the setting themselves up in the Stepstones and they both are rogue like.

Speaking of the Riverlands it was said that river kings more often than not had disloyal bannermen. So we have the Freys betraying the Tullys. In the book it was the Tullys who switched sides when the dragons came while Forrest Frey was said to be loyal to Rhaenyra.

Oh, and the circumstances are entirely different but Aegon II sent men to Essos to get sellswords and I guess it didn't turn out. I'm wondering if the same thing will happen with Stannis.

Not history repeating kind but the two pretender kings that rose after Rhaenyra fled the KL are obvious references to fAegon and Tommen.

The first was Trystane Truefyre , a squire to a disreputable hedge knight named Ser Perkin the Flea, who Ser Perkin declared was the natural son of Viserys I. After the storming of the Dragonpit and Rhaenyra’s flight, the Shepherd and his mob ruled much of the city, but Ser Perkin installed Trystane in the abandoned Red Keep and began to issue edicts. When Aegon II eventually retook the city, Trystane begged the boon of knighthood before he was executed, and this he received.

Truefyre? Really? Perkin is also an obvious reference to Perkin Warbeck, one of the inspirations for fAegon.

The other king was curiouser still— a child who became known as Gaemon Palehair. The son of a whore, this four-year-old boy was claimed to be a bastard of Aegon II (which was not improbable, given the king’s bawdy ways in his youth). From his seat in the House of Kisses atop Visenya’s Hill, he gathered followers by the thousands and issued a series of edicts. His mother later was hanged, having confessed he was the son of a silver-haired oarsman from Lys, but Gaemon was spared and taken into the king’s household. In time he befriended Aegon III, becoming his constant companion and food taster for some years, before dying of poison that might have been intended for the king himself.

Tommen has pale blonde hair. He is also a son of a whore. He is a boy king too. Like Gaemon, he issued a series of edicts. Gaemon’s whore mother was hanged whereas Cersei will be strangled (very similar fates). Tommen will most probably be poisoned. Gaemon claimed to be the successor of an erratic monarch who was poisoned. Tommen is the successor of Joffrey.

Actually, I think Aegon III and Sansa are the main parallels here. Both saw the execution of a parent by treachery and after that both forgot what it meant to be happy. I think Sansa will be returned to KL and will be cleared of Joffrey’s murder. Then Cersei will wed her to Tommen after the death of Margaery. So, the unlikely companionship of Gaemon/Aemon III will reflect on Tommen/Sansa until Tommen is killed.

Ouch. I like how you casually snuck that in there.

The Lannisters have a rich history of being SOABs.

A generation later, the Lannisters captured the town of Kayce when Herrock the Whoreson blew his great gold-banded horn and the town whores opened a postern gate to his men. Three successive ironborn kings attempted to retake the prize and failed, two of them dying on the point of Herrock’s sword.

No, I'm sorry, Cersei is not a whore. I guess you could argue that using sex as a bargaining tool makes her a whore, but that would only make her an amateur, it's not her actual profession. Same with, for instance, Littlefinger - he may be an amateur whore for sleeping with Lysa for power, but it's not his profession. Real professional whores who work hard to make a living would have reasons to be offended by the name their profession being so casually bestowed on anyone who dabbles in it.

LOL That's the worst crackpot about Sansa I've ever seen. Well, to be fair, one of the two worst - the other being that Jon will give her hand in marriage to the Great Other.

Aegon III and Sansa definitely have a ton of things in common, but there's someone else Aegon shares several similarities with.

Melancholic, sullen king who brooded in his rooms for days at a time, who lost his parents at an early age which had a giant impact on him . Refused to earn the love of his subjects and he has a younger brother that has all the charm and gift for diplomacy that he lacked. The loss of his parents also made him regard something superhuman as 'monstrous', in his case he lost all faith in the gods, rather than that he hated dragons.

So now the riverlands rose against him, led by Lord Edmyn Tully of Riverrun. Summoned to the defense of Harrenhal, Tully declared for House Targaryen instead

Jaime (when he becomes hand) reinstates Edmure, when Jon marches the North South he's summoned by the Iron throne to help defend against the North, he declares instead for Jon.

The Tully garrison departed the next morning, stripped of all their arms and armor. Each man was allowed three days' food and the clothing on his back, after he swore a solemn oath never to take up arms against Lord Emmon or House Lannister. "If you're fortunate, one man in ten may keep that vow," Lady Genna said.

"Good, I'd sooner face nine men than ten. The tenth might have been the one who would have killed me."

"The other nine will kill you just as quick."

1. I think Edmure will not be saved alive. Too much emphasis was made about they should kill all the prisoners at the first sign of attack. Edmure was also saved from captivity once.

2. Cersei, having wed Sansa to Tommen, will declare Sansa as the heir to North and Riverlands (dismissing the claim of Rickon in the North, calling him a feigned boy Stannis had produced to rally the North). Cersei will summon the Riverlords to defend the IT but the River Lords (under the direction of the Blackfish Tully) will declare for House Targaryen (Dany) for the promise of burning the Twins and Black Walder a la Harrenhal and Harren the Black, which they will go and watch.

I have long been of the opinion that either Nymeria or Tyene would be the end of Tommen. This does seem to point to Tyene finishing him off.

People keep saying these different regions will declare for Dany when there is no logical reason any of them would. She is bringing an army of dothraki savages, slaves who need feeding, dragons and winter is coming. The Reach are tied to the Lannisters but are likely to try their luck with Aegon. Aegon is sitting in Storms End. Dorne will likely have Arianne marry Aegon for an alliance. The Westerlands are going down, and will be headless chickens. The Riverlands are battered and want to avenge their wolf king. All the stuff in the Vale has been about them wanting to join the Northern cause which they can with Sansa around. The North is about to be beset by Winter and wont want to go south.
