[TWoIaF spoilers] The doom and the monstrous men

A little part of the description of the Doom tells us about a few cities which are still inhabited by people around Valyria, but they are deformed and monstrous.

"The most sinister of these is Mantarys, a place where the men are said to be born twisted and monstrous; some attribute this to the city's presence on the demon road"

Its probably crazy thouht but it occured to me that maybe with the eruption of volcanoes some radioactive material (uranium?) also get to the surface and the twisted people still inhabited around the region are mutated by the closeness of Valyria, which is a radioactive region (like Chernobil).

The volantene expedition which never came back may have also died because of the concentrated radioactive shock.

The weak point of this little theory is that there are 2 other cities mentioned, they are from the same distance but there are no reports of abominations from those cities.

A few of the cities away from the heart of Valyria remain inhabited, however—places founded by the Freehold or subject to it. The most sinister of these is Mantarys, a place where the men are said to be born twisted and monstrous; some attribute this to the city’s presence on the demon road. The reputations of Tolos, where the finest slingers in the world can be found, and of the city of Elyria on its isle, are less sinister, and less noteworthy as well, for they have made ties to the Ghiscari cities on Slaver’s Bay and otherwise avoid involvement in any efforts to reclaim the burning heart of Valyria.

Monstrous men are born in Mantarys, but at least they are often enough botn not that monstrous that men continue to dwell and give birth at Mantarys. Compare with Asshai, that has no children at all.

Why? Animals expressly die if brought to Asshai, do children likewise always die in Asshai?

Maybe Asshai just doesn't have day care or a school system.

Different policies, maybe? If the deformed children born in Tolos and Elyria are killed at birth, but the ones born in Mantarys are allowed to grow and reproduce, over time Tolos and Elyria would cull all the mutations, while Mantarys would keep them.

To me that screams Fire Wight Nation. Asshai is inhabited by all the people who has been resurrected with fire magic over the centuries. Over time, the fire wights outnumbered the living Asshai'i, an since they no longer give birth to more babies, there are no children (or very few children) in Asshai.

Just because many people in Asshai are demons or fire wights who cannot give birth to children does not mean that adult normal humans cannot move to Asshai and give birth there, or carry children to Asshai.

For comparison, there are also no children at the Wall. But there are a plenty of children beyond the Wall, and children in New Gift and Mole Town as well.

So, where are the adult people of Asshai from?

They were born before the fire wights became the majority, grew to adulthood, died and were resurrected as fire wights.

There probably are a few living Asshai'i left, who have children before becoming fire wights. And some foreigners who arrive to learn magic may be judged worthy of joining them and raised as fire wights.

Who has seen this "monstrous" people? As far as we know, those are Valyrian survivors and the Maesters don't want anyone being close to them.

Reminded me of... last night I saw The Chernobyl Diaries: they are mutants living there, and those from outside who got to see them were killed by them and the government. Maybe, whoever was behind the Doom, kills anyone who tries to get there (even Gerion Lannister) and scares people away with stories of monsters and demons.

Maybe... It fits duality.

Craster is not really equal to Asshai in measures, but sounds cool.

Euron sailed through the Smoking Sea, he must've seen some queer things and gotta know whats going on that area, I'm really looking forward to hear something from the next book about the Valyrian remnants
