ASOIAF Annimation series

I realize this isn't a "book" topic, but nor is it a GoT series topic, and since it's about the entire ASOIAF world, I hope this is the correct place for it.

My idea is the following: Since the expense of making a show about just a few years time in such a wonderful expansive world of stories GRRM has created is SO high, I feel that a great way for him/them to make more visual story series is through an animated set of seasons based on various times throughout the entire ASOIAF timeline.

Budgets wouldn't be nearly so much of a concern, far larger battles could be shown, instead of what we're seeing now, there could be tens of thousands of men in an animated battle. Think of the possibilities. I would hope it would be a more adult content sort of animated series, not like the current Star Wars stuff for example. I think of HBO commissioned a 22 episode 1 hour each season of say the War of the Usurper, or the Dance, or even say the events just after King's Landing - I'd pay to see it, for certain, and I'm willing to bet it would be just as popular as GoT is now.

With the excellent artwork in the recent TWOIAF book, it got me thinking about similar artwork excellence in the form of an animated series, a far less expensive way of bringing other stories to the screen, and giving the directors and producers FAR more flexibility and options than filming in the real world.

Opinions?

I would absolutely love it!!!

Personally I'd like it to have this sort of grown-up anime style, maybe a bit like Attack on Titan...? All raw and dark and epic with great character developement.

Aww, yes, and with a prequel-plot. Robert's rebellion or Aegon's conquest!

(And while we're at it could we also make an animated Harry Potter prequel series...? About the Marauders-generation and the whole Snape-Lily-plot...?)

Don't really see either of that happening though... :(

sounds good on the surface but i dont think it would be that cheap. 22 hours is a lot of animation, voice actors and writers. not to mention theyd have to buy the rights from grrm, his publisher and hbo. with a quick google search, fox gave seth macfarlane $50,000 for a 15 minute pilot of family guy and the south park movie had a budget of 21 million dollars. those were both also over 10 years ago.

found another article from 2009 where howard stern asked macfarlane how much one episode of family guy costs and he said about 2 million and american dad costs about 1 million.

as far as american animation goes those are the two top dogs and i doubt theyd have a japanese anime company do such a big american story (even though it definitely fits that style a lot more). i just dont think hbo would want to do it either. it would have a very different fan base than the current game of thrones series and they would probably be afraid of over saturating the product when theyre already making a ton of money on it.

I understand animation and CGI are expensive, they are just not AS expensive as a 60 to 80 million budget for a film or 10 1 hour HBO series budget.

It isn't so much about that anyway, but more about the flexibility and scale you can use with animation compared to needing live bodies and thousands of extras to portray huge and epic battle scenes.

Some of the largest formations we've seen are the Unsullied leaving Astapor and the Bolton Army when Roose gives the Bastard the Bolton name. And those are puny in terms of some of the battles described in the books.

Not to mention, for example, the "Mountain" in the TV series is only 2 inches taller than me, yet in the books is described as being near 8 feet tall, and being 3 or 4 hundred pounds of pure muscle. No such person exists in our world, there are some 8 foot tall stringy basketball players, but few real giants that look like body builders as well. With animation, such things are simple to show.

I think despite whatever it would cost, it would be a massive hit, say the war of the Usurper first, as the TV audience is more familiar with that story - it would be a profitable venture I'm certain, and easier to get on track than funding and casting another series. I have a feeling something along these lines has been discussed at HBO already, as GRRM in interviews has said he's been in negotiations with them for "other future projects", exact quote.

It would not be that cheap and I suspect the GoT won't have made the same success if it was an animation, but I can't help but think that perhaps it would have been the best option. Not only because of what you guys already said about the numbers, and magical creatures, but also because an animated series allows an suspension of belief the live action don't, so it would be able to go on with lots of aesthetics of the book that would have look absolutely ridiculous in the series. Like, Essos. All of it. And Daario.

But really, think how great it'd be if they didn't have to choose where to put the CGI money - we'd have the dragons and not-cheap-looking direwolves!
