Asshai Wine

If nothing grows in Asshai and they import all their wine, how does Illyrio has Asshai wines in his stock. Do they really import grapes and make their own wine? Is it mistake? Is Asshai wine euphemism for poison or something else?

Tyrion left the fat women to their loaves and kettles and went in search of the cellar where

Illyrio had decanted him the night before. It was not hard to find. There was enough wine there

to keep him drunk for a hundred years; sweet reds from the Reach and sour reds from Dorne,

pale Pentoshi ambers, the green nectar of Myr, three score casks of Arbor gold, even wines

from the fabled east, from Qarth and Yi Ti and Asshai by the Shadow.

Considering he names YiTi wines before it's highly unlikely

That's also Tyrion's thoughts and maybe he's simply mistaken about what's there due to not knowing all of the details about Essos? Perhaps he's just making assumptions about what exotic eastern lands' wines that Illyrio possesses? Tyrion specifically mentions they're from the "fabled east", maybe just him ignorantly lumping in Asshai with Qarth and Yi Ti? That is to say, that maybe Tyrion knows that Illyrio has wines from father east and just assumes specifics that might not be true

Well it is Tyrion, and he is listing wines in highly specific detail, with sorts and such, for him to continue in that venue and name Asshai probably means he saw wine bottles labeled with Asshai brands or geographical origins.

Then again this being Tyrion one would suspect he would know about Asshai being fruitless, because he is extremely well read especially on dragonlore and other esoteric topics so he should be very familiar with Asshai at least to the extent Citadel is.

Maybe the wine's from Asshai in the same way those dragon's eggs were 'from Asshai'.

Well that is an option, but Illyrio isn't the one who says wine is from Asshai, Tyrion monologues it, so there has to be label on the wine from which Tyrion knows it's from Asshai

Asshai is close to the Saffron Straits, the way for traders to further east. Maybe the Asshai's import the wine from Ulthos or Ulos or further away and then re-sell it to the westerners.

Would they really do that with all the gold and gems and magic stuff they have laying around in abundance?

And we don't see any sign that Ulthos and Ulos are inhibited because there are no settlements on the map

Hey, if there are people willing to buy wine there, there will people willing to bring it there too. Maybe merchants from Ulthos and Ulos are the ones who bring the wine to Asshai. As a matter of fact, an abundance of gems and gold would be a good incentive for merchants to carry their wares there, not the opposite.

Or it could mean that the Maesters have no clue about those lands. Or that GRRM hasn't bothered detailing them because none of his characters has ever been there and they are irrelevant to his stories.

Yes but Asshaians would have no incentive to re-bottle the wine and sell it as their own is what I was saying. So if Pentoshies bought Ulthosi wine in Asshai, it's still Ulthosi wine.

Unless the Pentoshi'i bought the barrels of wine at Asshai, and when they asked "hey, where does this wine come from", the other merchant answered "the island of Xvinj'gurr'hawj'don'tgothere'mur'xan'orjjadawakarrto'i" and the Pentoshi'i then said "fuck this; Asshai is exotic enough; we will call this 'Wine from Asshai', period".
