Shadowbinder from Asshai
It seems clear to me that Rhaegar was trying to recreate with his children the first three conquerors of Westeros... His statement "The dragon must have three heads", and his belief of Aegon being TPtwP, supports this. He even named his two children Rhaenys and Aegon, and with Lyanna he was probably looking for his third child, a girl he would have named Visenya (And got himself a boy. Guess he didn't see that coming). But in the original three siblings, Rhaenys is the youngest, and Visenya the eldest. So, why on earth would Rhaegar name his first girl Rhaenys, instead of Visenya? I know it's not that important, but it reaaaally bothers me [emoji36]
JonCon's Red Beard
He probably named Rhaenys after his own name and his mother's. Aegon was given a traditionally Targaryen name for a King: he was meant to be the sixth of his name.

So Rhaenys being called after one of the three is a coincidence? You know, he said the dragon has three heads, who were his two other heads?
