Guessing Games in Real Time, Can It Work?

Imagine if you will, a mutually agreed time when 5 or 10 or more of us guessing game players are on line playing at once. The only thing I can think of that is like that right now is the race at the end of a TTTNE thread. That is a lot of fun. This type of game would not have to move that fast, but it could be pretty close.

My first thought was for the phrase guessing game, with me hosting a version featuring well loved and known phrases and quotes and lines of poetry from LOTR.

We would keep score and see who guesses the most phrases correctly in a predetermined period of time and an actual winner would be declared. I was thinking maybe we could find a time slot during the Christmas break. Sooner would also be fine if we can manage it.

That was my first thought, but it could really be any one of the guessing games and we don't have to wait till Christmas.

I was trying to figure out a time tomorrow that would work for players in Europe and elsewhere as well as the USA, but I realized I have a house project that needs first priority so I can not commit to host tomorrow.

That does not mean somebody else couldn't. I'd love to see it work.

A while back I tried to launch a Botticelli game but only two showed up (me and Castellan) and it was frustrating not being on at the same time. Botticelli is a lot of fun so if we can make this real time game thing work - that is one I'd like to try.

What do you all think?

I would like to be part of such a guessing game - and you are right. It'd be like our "special event" back at TTTNE. But I know I won't be able to participate unless I have one or more days off. Due to my shifts and another factor that's quite important: the time difference. Don't forget about that, please.

I hopefully have two weeks off in December - keep your fingers crossed.

I think it was Lany and Pebbles who managed to host a game in real time -- we were figuring out ASoIaF anagrams and other things I do not remember very well now. I think Zar and KingGendry played that, too, maybe they might remember more.

If I am not mistaken. You might ask them for any advice, if you need one.

If I am around, I would play this game

that's great advice. I will check with Zar & Lany.

KT I

I did think about you guys in Europe. I could maybe do a 5 pm game tomorrow, but that would 11 pm for you guys on a Sunday, so I decided not to do that. KT I are you guys the same Greenwich time? I should know, but I need to figure this stuff out to make this work.

When we do get down to figuring out the exact time to play, it will be important for each of us to know our times relative to GMT.

<waves at the shadow> =o)

No, I'm one hour ahead of GMT.

It would have to be during the week for me. I head back to work this weekend.

eta: I think we did a Jeopardy game like this a couple years back...it was Lany, Pebble and Quoth. They ran the game using alts. Teams were set up and every one had their own chat room and one person from each was designated to PM the game alt host.

I chat so little that I would not know how to set this up, but seems like it could work. I've forgotten how Jeopardy works. It's similar to our hangman game isn't it?

I have sort of let this go at the moment. I will try to get back to it this week, and find out how many people are interested in doing this and when they can play. I think it could be pretty intense and fun.

I may shoot for a hosting time around 3 pm on Nov. 30, the Sunday after Thanksgiving (USA). First, I'll see how many are interested and can make that time. If less than 3, it's not worth the bother, I think.

On the other hand, I may do a trial run a week before. Picking times that work for both sides of the Atlantic is tough, so I may first try a USA only time like 8 pm EST, USA (GMT -5). Possibly even on a week day.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm ready to take a shot at this:

PHRASE GUESSING GAME - SPEED VERSION.

SATURDAY NIGHT 9 PM EST USA.

If you are interested in playing, please pm me, or post here or in the current phrase game thread. If I get two players, I'll go ahead with it. Of course I'm hoping for more, but as I've seen in the regular game, two attentive players can make the game move pretty fast.

This game will focus on lines & quotes from AGOT, the first 200 pages or so. Points will be given for correct guesses and a winner will be declared based on who has the most points after an hour. I'm hopeful we can get through 20 entries in that amount of time - as I will be hitting "refresh" like a madman and getting you answers to your letter questions as fast as you post them.

Should be intense. :)

Oh damn, that is way too late for me :( that's like 2am here. Let me know if you hold one in the future that's a bit earlier. :) like 11pm my time

Sorry.

I know. I wish I could host about 3 pm here, but not possible. I'm hoping to find a time or two during the Christmas holidays to host a session of two. I will let you know.

It's 3 am where I live and while it happens sometimes that I'm still up at that time, I really shouldn't, so I won't join you :(

But tell us how it was, and if it's funny, maybe I can somtime host at a better time for europeans.

Yes I'm hoping to be able to do a European friendly one during the Christmas holidays if not before.

We did it!

The game last night was a success. real time phrase game

It was much, much slower than I imagined. We played for 2 1/2 hours and got through only 8 phrases - or maybe 9. I was envisioning 1 every 5 minutes, so that was a fantasy.

I would like to host again, but I'm not sure when that will be. I would also gladly play if someone else hosts.

For European players, would 8 or 9 GMT on a Saturday be a time that you would/could play? And for the Americans that would be 3 or 4 pm for east coasters like me and noon or 1 pm for the west. It's not a great time for me, but I would play or host if we could get more people in.
