Top 5 blunders in the Series

Ser Eric

Recommended Posts

1. Rhaegar 'kidnapping' Lyanna - Rhaegar thought it was a smart idea to run away with a woman, who was the daughter of the Warden of the North, betrothed to the Lord of the Stormlands and whose brothers were a ward to the Warden of the East and betrothed to the daughter of the Lord of the Riverlands. It wasn't. Thankfully, Robert and Ned got rid of the emo and his friends though the former didn't turn out a whole lot better.

2. Balon attacking the North - Balon's stupidity knows no bounds. Instead of either sticking to the Iron Islands or getting into an alliance with one of the kings in exchange for lands he does all of Tywin's work for him and THEN asks for the alliance. He put his misplaced sense of revenge over plain common sense. Fortunately, he died. Unfortunately for the Iron Born he was replaced by someone even more retarded.

3. Robb marrying Jeyne - Oh Robb...Honour, love and abject stupidity proved to be his undoing. RIP Young Wolf.

4. Tyrion gift wrapping Myrcella to Dorne - Oberyn must have laughed himself silly.

5. Ned warning Cersie - This was buffoonery on an epic scale. Good intentions, true, but silly and naive nonetheless.

Not smart, but not a blunder. He had no way to foresee the consequences his action had. People here are either genuinely smart people, or just asses who lack the ability to place themselves in others shoes. Not a smart idea to kidnap an LP daughter.. but did he know that there would be a war? Did he know that Brandon would rush to KL to demand his head? (- Most noble would probably gather information first, before asking the crown prince to come out and die- you could perhaps place Brandon on the list here? Since he "started" the war by doing this.. lol.. you can always find "reasons" for something.. everyone is to blame if your a bit creative).

And we dont really know what happened. Theory is that Benjen was told, but got to drunk to tell. They may have tried to say something before they left, but it got lost.. My point is: we dont know what happened, lets wait and see and not judge soo much.

1) Agree completely. There's also the future succession crisis he creates with those actions. So even if a full blown rebellion is averted another war is probably coming.

2) I disagree that attacking the North was a blunder. It didn't cost the Iron Born much, Theon's own idiocy not withstanding. The North can't retaliate and the Iron Born didn't suffer significant loses so it's not that much of a mistake. It would have been smarter to take Robb's offer of an alliance but Balon's goal was reestablishing the Old Way and the North was the best spot to start that. Long term it's a dumb plan since the Iron Throne will never abide a Kingdom of reavers right of its coast.

3) Probably the biggest blunder of the series.

4) I don't think that's a blunder. It's perfectly reasonable to assume that Dorne would enter the war to get revenge against his family. Sacrificing Myrcella to placate that threat is a reasonable trade off.

5) Stark honour once again causing one of the biggest blunders in the series.

Let's see...

1. Ned telling Cersei "I know your secret". He had good intentions, no doubt about that, but by then he should have known better.

2. Oberyn not finishing off the Mountain but actually putting his foot on his chest to gloat and getting himself killed. Argh.

3. Robb marrying Jeyne just because he didn't want to dishonour her. Starks and their honour, really. No wonder they're going down.

4. Viserys threatening Dany and her unborn child in front of Drogo and the whole khalasaar, plus drawing a blade in Vaes Dothrak.

5. Catelyn abducting Tyrion and taking him to the Eyrie.

Pretty much House Stark lol

Ned telling Cersei

Catelyn taking Tyrion hostage

Catelyn letting Jaime go

Robb marrying Jeyne

Sansa telling Cersei about them leaving

So much stupidity....and this is the ruling family of an entire region.

Agree.

Add in Jon rushing off to Winterfell to take on Ramsay...

And they all end up paying the price for their blunders.

:agree: Except I would replace 4 with Viserys threatening to kill the Khal's baby in front of the Khal himself and 5 with Cersei arming the Faith Militant.
