Why do people think Theon "deserved" it?

I notice a lot of people on this forum ( Die hard Stark loyalists I assume) think Theon deserved exactly what he got from Ramsay. I find that attitude shocking.

Theon was never my favorite character by any stretch, and he definitely betrayed Robb, by seizing Winterfell.

It's not even that Im arguing Theon wasn't horrible for doing what he did as Prince of Winterfell (which is debatable), Im just arguing that no human being, not even people like Jeff Dahmer or Charles Manson, deserves to be turned into a "Reek", simply because I believe wrong and inhumane to do that to a person. Apparently that is a controversial opinion to hold..

Could someone, preferably a Stark loyalist, explain to me just why Theon deserved to be made into Ramsay's new Reek?

Deserved it coz: betrayed the Starks who were family for him. Killed guys in Winterfell who he knew and liked before. Became more and more greed, wanted glory desperately.

Didn't deserve it coz: he was like a prisoner of Ned. Wanted to be a worthy son to Balon and act as it's expected from an ironborn.

So we can't really decide that he deserved it or not, also there are guys like Jaime who did more bad things and didn't suffer 5% of Theon's suffering. But hey, life is a cruel and unfair bitch.

I've always felt that he never deserved all that. He was in the end a 'hostage' on the Stark's castle, away from his family and his true God and way of living. It's unfair all the pain he had to go though, that blood thirst Ramsay deserves dead for treating Theon like that and using him.

I understand why Theon did what he did when trying to conquer Winterfell since he was desesperate to show himself as the true king of the Iron Islands... he was always judged and miss understood and is not at all the worst character on the series... some of them may deserve the torture Theon went though... but not him.

I'm just glad he's with his sister and I'm anxious what his future will be.

Look, pre Ramsey Theon sucks. His PoV is the biggest trainwreck in the series (and YES, I am including Cersei in this ranking). His decisions suck. His reasons suck. His personality is awful. It's just blunder after blunder, all while Theon is sitting there thinking about what a badass/sex-god he is. On first read it was beyond infuriating. Later knowing what happens in the end on rereads I'm just like... "Oh Theon... you are the world's biggest tool". Getting caught by Ramsey - yeah he definitely deserved that. Everything that follows, no.

I’m going to go out on a crazy bleeding heart, liberal, intersectional feminist, Social Justice Warrior limb and say:

No one deserves to be tortured.

:agree:

Some people deserve to die, no one deserves torture or rape.

WOW! It took 7 posts for this to go from "Did Theon Deserve to Become Reek" to "Dany Should be Burned Alive!". Is that a new record?

Seriously, wtf!?

I doubt it. I’m sure there are threads that go: Post 1: I think Sandor Clegane would benefit from Art Therapy. Post 2: Dany is horrible and she deserves to be eaten by Rhaegal.

Eaten by dragons; burned alive; flayed alive; given to the Ironborn as a salt-wife; given to Ramsay are all suggestions that I've read on this site.

"Deserves got nothing to do with it!"

Unforgiven

Most of Theon's evils I would argue were acts of desperation of which he has great remorse even before his downfall. I give him a pass on the whole betraying the Starks, because his only other choice would have been betraying his blood! I give him a pass on the whole taking Winterfell and brutalizing its smallfolk, because most of them openly defied him (the Septon was for the Drowned God, so he gets the religious fanatic pass.). The Miller's kids was wrong, but I believe it was an act of desperation or he would have lost authority in the castle and that would surely have led to a quick death.

Theon's greatest mistake was not fleeing with Asha and that was such folly that I think he deserved becoming Reek, all but the castration part. No one deserves castration!

We don't really know he was castrated...
