A lot of Dillane's little tics are what keep showStannis from being a complete fanatic. You can look at the disgust on his face while the Florents burn, and again with the dinner scene, to see that he's not happy about it.

I don't get people who say D&D hate Stannis, all they said was he would be terrible as king. (come on guys, we can see why.) But they admit to admiring him and go out of their way to show he's a good man deep down. The way he cares about his daughter in the show is really admirable and something we don't see in the books. They made him respect and call Ned a good man while Book Stannis just bitches about Ned at any chance he gets. He also looks awesome saving the wall and personally fights with his men during the Blackwater. (cheesy as fuck and something Book Stan would find stupid but it's clear D&D find Stannis awesome.) He also goes to Davos and says he's sorry about the son he lost (does Book Stannis even mention Davos loses many of his sons in the battle?). He also doesn't humiliate his mentor and friend, Cressen. He doesn't treat his wife like shit. He doesn't burn 100s of old heart trees in the show. He even shows REGRET for killing Renly!!!

I will agree they kinda fucked him up in the S3 finale in the way he treats Davos but that and the time he burns Florent are the ONLY times they fucked him up.

Want to talk about someone D&D horribly butchered? Loras and Renly. S3 Sansa too(looks like they are finally giving her justice though). Those are people they butchered.

Also my unsullied friends either find him badass or weak for being manipulated by Mel (lol), none say he's being shitty or fanatical. Both groups think he's honorable but ruthless.

To answer the question, Dillane IS Stannis! He brings the dude to life.

He is great at the role, the second season the show made him like the villain to viewers.When GRRM wrote the blackwater episode, he wrote him more accurately.

Hmmn, I can't think of any interview where he says he doesn't like being on the show .. I do remember Stephen saying he's just not a fan of the nudity:

It was actually Neil Marshall's idea to have him as a frontline General in ep. 209, yankee211, to give him more to do in the latter parts of the episode. In GrrM's commentary for that episode he says that in his script Stannis stayed on shore with his troops to give commands. So some of the likeability that episode gave him came from Neil Marshall's contributions, not just GrrM's.

We will get more of him next season, Lady Meera Reed, D and D said so at SDCC.

I was dissapointed Renly's peach didn't make it but I enjoyed the Stannis/Jon talk at the end of season 4 regarding Ned so I am hopeful there will be some good scenes this season

In particular I'll be keeping an eye out for the "Ed fetch me a block" scene....loved that in ADWD

He wouldn't make a good King, similar reasons why duke of Wellington made a fantastic General but struggled as British Prime Minister

The role of King is a mix of politician and military commander in medieval context, Stannis is a great military commander but lacks the "common touch" so to speak and charisma. Renly was the other way round

The irony of the Baratheon claim is that in the wake of Roberts death it is a mix of both Renly (fantastic politician) and Stannis that would have been a perfect King. A bit like how Julius Caesar was an excellent military commander and had the populist touch

I reckon Stannis has a populist streak in him that he could take advantage of. He'd never be loved among the nobility (bar a select few, anyway), nor they with him, but his willingness to protect the people (even if you consider it insincere) and his appreciation for useful smallfolk (Louis XI?) could make him appealing to them. The Riverlands is the only region as war torn as the North, and while in the former the smallfolk ran from lords and their armies, Stannis had the smallfolk in the latter rallying to his side after he drove off the ironborn.

It's convenient that most his enemies (ironborn, Lannisters, Freys, Boltons) are generally unpopular with everyone who isn't them.

Bryan Cogman had a funny , as it turned out made up, story about that in the Q&A on old-old-WIC , tho he did say they looked for a peach in NI and could not find one that time of year.

Well now we got Drogon last season, perfect spot the for Rhaegal and Viserion but no.

Coming into season 5 without their names , on the show, seems odd.

I dont agree. I think he needs to be at the Wall until episode 5.

The election will not take place before the end of episode 2, imo, and then we need at least 4 scenes of him there (with Jon, Mel, Selyse, Shireen, Davos, potentially Aemon) so episode 3 would be too early for him to leave.

Karls personal life was intriguing. The way his wife figured out very quickly what he'd done very quickly implied he was a serial philanderer (maybe not during their relationship but during his previous ones).

Dillane is fantastic in that role in general and I'd love to see a second series but I'd be happy if they left it at one series rather than try and cobble together a sequel just for the sake of it.

The Bridge (original swedish/danish version) had a second season, and was quite good (though it was a little bit unbelievable that the same two cops are solving another major case, but hey). The subplot between the imprisoned serial killer and Martin (danish Karl) was really good. I expected it to be a cheap Hannibal Lecter sort of knockoff, but it wasn't at all. (Incidentally Martin was a serial philanderer).

It will actually be funny, given some of the similarities to GoT.

When you next see Martin he's aged considerably, his hair gone all greyish/white, because he hasn't coped well with his son's death whatsoever. Like Stannis post-Blackwater.

I think it would be EXTRA improbable to have a French cop and a UK cop team up again but if the writers are clever enough they can figure something out. I read some details about what happens to the "Martin" character alright because I was interested to know what would be in store for "Karl" if they made a second series and followed the "personal" plotline of the Scandi one.
