I've recently been getting into old school death metal demos from the late 80's and 90's, and (running the risk of sounding like a hipster) I honestly feel like they are better than a lot of the professionally done studio albums done by the same band. Demo's really have this texture and character to them that I find really appealing.

I recommend searching on youtube:

Nihilist; Compilation 1987-1989 (Abnormally Deceased is by far my favourite track)

Sentenced; Rotting Ways to Misery

And then just searching through the suggest videos sidebar for more great ones.

Anybody else really into demos?

  • 2 weeks later...

I spend a fair amount of time listening to demos each year. But I don't specifically value them over studio albums -- some are better than the albums, others are half-baked murkfests.

I just finished up a weekend of kick-ass metal. Defenders of the Old festival was this weekend, and we got to see killer sets from Exciter, High Spirits, Brocas Helm, Nifelheim, and Ares Kingdom, plus a bunch of other bands. Sadly, The Rods' set was marred with technical difficulties, but when they were able to play they sounded great.

I don't care about metal very much and do not recognize a single band from Xray's post above. I just like you people.

And I wish that Brocas Helm was named Broccoli Helm. That is all.

Fuck yeah!

Second straight run through.... Just getting better. This is admittedly my first experience with Melechesh, but there is something vaguely familiar about it, like some beautiful unholy mix of Witchery and Watain, but even better than that sounds. Absolutely in love.

In other news, I've finally got around to checking out a bunch of stuff you've been repping over the past couple years, X-ray. Diolectian, Horrendous, Mgła, Teitanblood, that kind of shit. Holy hell I've been missing out. That Mgła especially is something I really need in my life, so fucking gnarly!

You better listen to Emissaries sometime soon then. Fantastic album.

I've only managed one listen of Enki so far, so I can't pass any judgement yet, but I have a feeling I will be liking it.

The new Blind Guardian is not really doing it for me. Some good songs, but too many that are just kinda... okay? Plus the mix is awful and makes listening in the car... difficult. Definitely not their worst album but kinda middle-of-the-pack and fairly unexciting.

I'm really kinda digging the new Sylosis album though even if it has no business being over an hour long. I never listened to them before but I picked it up at random at a music shop a couple weeks back and I'm glad I did. Some pretty killer thrash-y-whatever-the-fuck-genre this is.

New Leviathan album sounds great. Anybody else a fan of black metal?

Really depends on the type black metal. Black metal with heavy folk or atmospheric elements? Yes please.

Durkad is correct, RRL: Definitely check out Emissaries.

And really glad to hear that you've found some of my recs to your liking!

I can't get enough of this song lately:

Been doing a tour through Devastation's back catalogue to make sure I want to drop the $$ on the reissue of their material by BBTAD. Thinking that, yes, I do!

Anybody else a fan of black metal?

In general, yes. But I've been pretty bored with many of the releases I've run across in the last couple of years. Only ones I'm looking forward to right now are a possible new Mgla and new Obsequiae.

How many could you guess?

I got 16/20.

Didn't know 5, 9, 15.

Knew what the band on 13 was since it's obvious, but couldn't guess the exact song.

Test your mettle!

16/20 as well.

I missed 5, 12, 15 and 18 (probably could've gotten 18 if I'd thought about it, but meh).

Nightwish's Endless Forms Most Beautiful...

Didnt really know what to think of the album at first (I wanted way more Marco's vocals, I was so expecting his voice to respond to Floor's ! So yeah, way less Marco singing than on Imaginaerum, that's a let down for me).

But the more I listen to it the more I love it. It's a very deep and intimate album somehow, full of layers, hidden gems in the songs and most of all wonderful lyrics. Tuomas never disapoints on that front, he's a beautiful poet !

Of course if you've never liked or understood Nightwish, just move away, it wont talk to you at all. But for those who can dive and drown in their universe, just go !

That one doesn't drop here until March 31; needless to say I am excited!

^ Favourite track for the moment : Weak Fantasy, although Edema Ruh and Yours Is An Empty Hope are close seconds.

Least favourite : My Walden. It's a pale copy of I Want My Tears Back without the huge emotional and bombastic power of that song.

emissaries!

let me echo the sentiment. it is a really really awesome album. it is without a doubt the best album from melechesh.

aside from enki i have been listening to ecydisis from horrendous a lot.

one of my favorite bands santa cruz's stoner tech death outfit decrepit birth is closing on finishing a new album. those guys are fucking great.

as mdf is a couple months out i am getting pretty excited!

I cannot wait for MDF.

I've been wallowing in Riot. My god, they were just so fucking good. I urge you all to get a copy of Fire Down Under and sing the chorus to Outlaw with me and Mr. X.

Bet your life on the silver ball
Spin it 'round the wheel
Will it land on the black or the red?
The outlaw's got no deal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYoKqhsUFuw

And then you get right down to brass fucking tacks with the first track off the same album:

Swords and tequila
Carry me through the night
Swords and tequila
Carry me through the fight!
