Philly Cheese Steaks

My understanding (going from Chip Kelly here) is that it's either Pat's or Geno's.

Chip Kelly is wrong, Pats and Genos are tourist traps.

Tony Lukes is a good spot. Also good with pork, rabe, and sharp provelne.

Jim Steaks is a block or so from Pat and Geno is liked. There is one on South st.

Ishkabibble on also on South and also do good on Chicken Cheesesteaks.

A place called John's Roast Beef does good cheesesteaks and not too far from Tony Lukes.

All those places are in the South Philly area.

Can you just get it over with and propose marriage to Chip Kelly? :P

Forget cheesesteaks. You need to get one of these:

Roast pork and broccoli rabe. So, so good.

Eww. :ack:

I have written these down, thanks.

I have the misfortune of having a best friend who's from Philly, and he claims that getting a cheesesteak any way other than "whiz with" (aka with Cheez Whiz and onions) is blasphemous. All of his Philly-area buddies seemed to concur.

I'm wondering if anyone else has heard of the "Whiz-With" being a specially-lauded choice.

That pork rabe thing looks way better, tbh.

eta: I had one from Pat's whiz-with, it was okay but I've had better cheesesteaks. I don't think I'd ever want to have cheez whiz again. The place was definitely a tourist attraction.

Pat's is the place where it supposedly originated, for what that's worth. Neither is my particular favorite, but they're fine.

Some people really harp on the whiz, but I'm someone who grew up in Philly and prefers provolone. I do get fried onions, though. Along with hot and/or sweet peppers.

My own favorite is actually a small place in Jersey, but in the city Jim's, Tony Luke's, or John's Roast Pork are all good.

ETA: if you end up at a shop where they're running down a list for yes/no answers, your standard Philly cheesesteak doesn't tend to be loaded with twenty different things. In my experience, people tend to ask for mushrooms, onions, or peppers, depending on what they like. If you start being offered bacon or pepperoni, well go for it if that's your thing, but don't feel you have to say yes to get a classic steak.

My daughter went to university in Halifax, and she told me about this hole in the wall place that served cheese steaks from midnight to 4 am only, for the after drinking crowd. Her boyfriend was quite fond of them and always called for "more Whiz!"

I'm going on holiday to Philadelphia tomorrow (5 hour flight :ack: ), and I need a recommendation on where to get the best cheese steak. How about it, board?

I don't find Pat's or Geno's very inspiring; you only go there if 1) you are a tourist; or 2) it's 3am, everything else is closed and you're drunk and hungry.

If you want good fries to go with a steak, you've got to get them from Ishkabibbles, which has two locations on South Street. One is between 3rd and 4th (near Jim's Steaks) and the other is between 5th and 6th, both on the north side of the street. The latter location has eat-in facilities, but the food's the same.

Also, I wouldn't expect too much from cheesesteaks. Sure, they're tasty, but they're just cheap beef on a roll with cheese.

.

.

.

Wait, what am I saying? Get one.

Not a fan of Pat's and Geno's either. And I find Jim's way too dry for my tastes.

I like Sonny's on Market Street in Old City.

My favorite was Lee's, though a bunch of them closed in the past few years, including the one in my hometown. :(

Eww. :ack:

You are seriously missing out. Roast pork with broccoli rabe, provolone, and hot peppers is a delightful and tasty combination.

I get it. And i was mostly teasing. But if that was actually how you asked for it, "just the most basic, etc" you might want to work on your adjectives. Try quintessential, classic, or original instead of basic, stock etc.

My favorite steaks:

Whiz, ketchup wit'
American, mushrooms, ketchup, mayo, wit'

Extra provie, pizza sauce, hots, wit'out.

Many of the suggestions are good. Tony Luke's, Ishkabibble's (for the chicken steak), Sonny's on Market between 2nd and 3rd are all solid choices.
