Aegon V tragic king?

Recommended Posts

I liked reading about his reign. And we will get more of him in Dunk and Egg Novellas. I think he was the fourth best targaryen king (after Aegon I, Jaehaerys and Daeron II) as he was genuinely concerned about the people. His kids were just too stubborn.

Aegon III is like 300 levels of tragic above him, tbh.

Aegon V had a dad that was smashed by a huge rock, a brother that set himself on fire, another that died of aids, a son who was killed fighting his war, a lost of a good friend in Lyonel, and the death of many close to him in Summerhall on his hands.

Aegon saw his mother BEING EATEN BY A DRAGON.

Aegon V married for love but he wanted his children to marry for political reasons. However, his children inherited their mother's stubborness and chose to marry for love as well. Aegon V didn't know of his children's marital decisions until it was too late for him to do much about it. It was either alienate his children or accept their marriages. Aegon V's children just married and broke betrothals without asking for his permission which is fair enough considering Aegon V didn't ask for their permission or gave them a choice when he was making their marriage plans.

It is refreshing for a Targaryen king to care for the smallfolk but the smallfolk don't have (much) power and the lords have a lot of it. Alienating the strong to protect the weak may be morally commendable to Egg but it was politically inept for Aegon V.

Aegon III was also a child when all that shit happened to him. Then he was alone in a court surrounded by people all vying for power after a brutally devastating civil war that cost the lives off both his parents, and most of his siblings. Yeah, I'm going for Aegon III as more tragic.

Aegon didn't set a castle on fire with his loved ones like Aegon did.

Aegon's dad was smashed by a giant rock, imagine what the corpse looked like.

Aegon III's mother was fed to a dragon by his uncle, where after he was locked in a dungeon in Dragonstone; his three elder brothers perished in the war, as did his father. It's not like he knew that Viserys was alive when he was crowned. Sure, he had his elder twin sisters - but coming from such a massive family that should shoe how much he'd lost. Factor in his mother being devoured by a dragon - a sigil and symbol so synonymous with his house that he'd never be able to get rid of it - and Aegon III's life was likely pretty miserable after the Dance of The Dragons.

Bloodraven and Aenys Blackfyre.

Punishing Bloodraven wasn't amoral - Brynden had broken a promise that he'd made representing the Iron Throne as Hand of the King. Aegon could have had him executed or confined to the black cells for life - he let him take the black as, likely, he understood that Brynden had (again) placed the hood of his house and the kingdom before his own personal honour. In doing so Brynden ended up taking up the honourable position of Lord Commander. Aegon was right to punish him, but also allowed him a chance at honour still.
