Most Faithful Character

Which is, in your opinion, the tv series character that better//most faithfully) portrays the character in the books?

For me it is Walder Frey!

When I read the Red Wedding after watching the show it was like hearing the tv character all over again! Definitely a favourite! :)

What's yours?

Interesting question. I wouldn't say Tywin's that faithful - I doubt the book's Tywin would have had those conversations with Arya (and no mutton-chops!). Does book-Frey have the amusing/pathetic dirty old man routine that the show one does? I recall the show one as being funnier than the book one, but I may be forgetting something from the book - so again, perhaps not that faithful. I wouldn't say Sean Bean was faithful because he was a good fifteen years older than the book character (ditto the Hound, and in that case I think the aging up is actually a bit more of a problem). The kids (Arya, Joffrey, Robb, Sansa, Bran, Daenerys) are all "too old" to be faithful. I don't recall book-Viserys having the depth and tragic element that show-Viserys displayed a couple of times. I think Roose is wonderful on the show, but he's nothing like the soft-spoken leech guy of the book.

Note that for all of the above, I'm not complaining at all! I think pretty much all of those performances are good - but they're not faithful to the book.

At the moment I'm coming around to thinking Khal Drogo, or perhaps Melisandre. Or Maester Aemon? Or Oberyn - perhaps Oberyn most of all, because I basically pictured Inigo Montoya when reading the book, and I suspect Pedro Pascal did the same thing when performing.

Tywin and Jaime Lannister, Ned and Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Joffrey "Baratheon", too many others to name.

I would say that Jaime and Arya do not resemble their book characters at all at the moment. Although Jaime was very close to his book counterpart in season 1, later not so much. Arya was pretty close in first 3 seasons, but in the last season she was changed quite a lot.

From those who are the most faithful, I would say Varys, Viserys, Khal Drogo. Tywin as well.

Arya's arc in season 2 was very different from her book arc, and Tywin was highly out of character in their scenes together.

Oh yeah, book Walder is totally lecherous and known for it, and he also has many funny moments. GRRM lulls you so well with the "comical dirty old man" stereotype, that you don't expect him at first to be a real villain and do something horrible.

Almost all of adults actors are 10-15 years older than their characters are in the book: Ned, Cat, Stannis (he's some 20 years older), Davos, Tyrion (also 20 years older), Littlefinger, Sandor, Tywin (some 10 years older), and that includes adult actors playing teenagers (Dany, Jon, Robb, Gendry). The teenage actors started off at almost the same age as their show characters (2-3 years older than their book characters) and are now 2-3 years older than their show characters - and very close to the ages their book characters would have been after the 5 years gap. Drogo is one of the few where the actor was the character's book age, and Oberyn is a bit younger.

As for the most faithful characters, I'd go with: Oberyn (Pedro really brought him to life), Walder Frey, Varys (so far - who knows what they'll do to his arc and character motivations in future episodes, going by what we know about the cuts), Drogo, Jaqen H'ghar, Viserys (if he seems more tragic in the show, it's only because there's an actor playing him, otherwise he's completely the same), and with some reservations - Robert - minus the height and build, Ned - minus the age and swordfighting abilities, Joffrey - they added some crimes to him and he's a few years older, but he's still the same guy...
