Agamemnon Posted December 8, 2014 Share Posted December 8, 2014 Does anyone else wonder what happened to Nettles?I started wondering about her whereabouts after TPATQ and I figured the the new history book would clear everything up. First reading about the Dance of the Dragons gives some false hope:Nettles and the Sheepstealer vanished before the war's end, and none could say where they went until years after. This makes you think if you keep reading you will find out more about where they went, but this is not the case. Last it says of Nettles or her dragon by name is they were seen crossing the Bay of Crabs.However TWOIAF might give another nugget of insight: Amongst the Burned Men, a youth must give some part of his body to the fire to prove his courage before he can be deemed a man. This practice might have originated in the years after the Dance of the Dragons, some maesters believe, when an offshoot clan of the Painted Dogs were said to have worshipped a fire-witch in the mountains, sending their boys to bring her gifts and risk the flames of the dragon she commanded to prove their manhood. aryagonnakill#2 Posted December 8, 2014 Share Posted December 8, 2014 ^ If the burned men knew where she was staying, it stands to reason that after the dragon died they would have taken the eggs, and for that matter the dragon bone, and done SOMETHING/ANYTHING with it. There is no evidence of the tribesmen trading, but that doesn't mean they never did. Making a bow is also as ancient a practice as they come, you'd think if they had a huge dragon skeleton then they'd all have dragonbone bows, or at least dragonbone something. It's been a while since I read TPATQ and I can't remember if there's anything concrete about what happened to her and Aemond's bastard after the Dance. She has a prophetic dream, too, right? That's a mystery we need to look into. Nettles probably is the Fire Witch, but Alys Rivers still needs to be accounted for - and who knows, maybe the connection to Nettles is a fake out. As for the arguement that the Burned Men should have dragon bone or dragon something, I agree, but only if the dragon stayed there after Nettles dies, whenever that is. Dragons obviously live longer than people. However long Nettles stayed, the dragon probably found a place to roost... But then there are no dragon sightings that we hear of to match this scenario. It makes sense for Nettles to stay ensconced in the mountains with her "worshippers," especially since her life may be forfeit if she's found by certain nobility. But the dragon, after she dies, what would it do? Seek out a geothermal area to live in, like dragon stone? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

RumHam Posted February 22, 2015 Share Posted February 22, 2015 It's a little ridiculous to point to the lack of dragonbone weapons among the burned men as evidence that Sheepstealer didn't die there. Nettles and Sheepstealer didn't even exist as ideas in the author's mind when he wrote the descriptions of the Burned Men. The absence of these artifacts is nothing on the retcon-scale compared to things like "All three of the sons of Aegon V married for love" or the Penrose thing or Arlan not being old enough to have actually seen the last dragon. But the more I see this topic and theory pop up the more I am convinced that she is the fire witch that the Burned Men used to pay tribute to.
