No one can know the social repercussions of naked female nipples. We can all have our theories and they are all valid in the hypothetical. I will never understand this need to establish that one person's hypothesis is inherently superior to another person's hypothesis. You don't know the answer. Nobody knows the answer until we try it. Should we try it? Why the hell not? If female nipples were suddenly decriminalized I would expect that nipples on display would go from Seriously Extremely Rare to Extremely Rare. I mean, shit, even in the Janet Jackson Superbowl Bad Taste Boob Reveal the nipple was still covered and there was an absolute shit storm. Women don't choose their nipple exposure based on the law so much as social repercussion. (Yep, that's my pet theory.) Changing the law will have a very minimal impact on social acceptance of visible female nipples. (Yep, that's also just my opinion.) The point of the intellectual debate with regards to inequality is that the female nipple should not be forbidden if the male nipple is not forbidden. Again, I don't care about the nipple--the nipple isn't the point. The point is that women are held to a standard which not only affects their comfort, it affects the perception of their morality and character and that is bullshit. As a woman, I do envy the bodily freedom of men. One day I was waiting at a stop light and saw a man on a bike. He was sweating and pulled his shirt up to wipe his brow. I envied him because it was a completely natural and unselfconscious act. It didn't matter that his chest was exposed for that moment of relief. A woman doing that would subject herself to lurid speculation and judgment from which he is completely insulated and oblivious. Again, I will stipulate that women need an on/off switch for sexual visibility. In the absence of that, we all just have to muddle through the best we can. But now that we've entered the realm of who gets aroused more and by what, I've got to say it. Men, if you think it is a woman's responsibility to keep you under control, you are the problem, not the solution.
