EW on Arya’s New Costume

Westeros

Recommended Posts

Over at EW, James Hibberd reveals a design for Arya Stark’s brand new costume for the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. With quotes from Maisie Williams, the article notes it’s a radical new design for Arya who has spent most of the past four seasons in androgynous clothing, and now has something a bit more feminine with which to blend in in the Free City of Braavos.

She also teases an upcoming scene, one that has to do with her previous clothing, which sounds like it may be drawn from a sequence in A Feast for Crows.

I hope this, the cover of EW and the first Raven teaser means that the team have realised that Arya deserves more marketing focus. I understand that at the beginning having one of the lead characters as a child may have given the wrong impression but the show is so big now, Maisie has worked so hard and done so well in the role the recognition would be welcome. She's been the lead of her own plot since the end of season 1, her character has appeared in every book so far, she has the most point of view chapters of any female yet. She is a leading character and she is well loved.

As for the new look, it cute. Its going to be nice to see her blossom into a young woman. And perhaps even radically, shake off 'masculinity' because it is not necessary for her power. That would be something. She can be vengeful, she can be murderous, she can wear a weapon AND a skirt AND little heels! It does not compromise her smart mouth and her tendency to be badass. And she doesn't need to use sex to do it.

I like it. It would be unrealistic for her to continue wearing the boys clothing she wore on the road. Can't wait to see the rest of her costumes in the next season. I'm also looking forward to seeing Sansa's costumes and wondering whether they're going to continue with the 'gothic' look they gave her in the last episode of last season. The GOT costume designers honestly do such an amazing job!
