The Darkstar; Hero or Villain?

Ser Gerold Dayne... The Darkstar. He seems to hold Ser Arthur Dayne in despite, having chosen to metaphorically be the opposite of him. Could it be possible that Ser Gerold purposely injured Myrcella instead of killing her? Could his role in the future (if any) be a positive one, negative or neither?

I think that part of the reason Doran finds him to be so dangerous is because he holds some kind of important claim or information that would upset his plans. There's been a lot of theorizing as to who Darkstar really is. Some say that he's part Targaryen and thus would have a claim to the Iron Throne. OR others have theorized that he knows what happened at the Tower of Joy (maybe he was there) and if R+L=J, he could be carrying information that could throw Doran's plan way outta whack.

He’s dangerous because he’s a violent asshole who knows that whatever cover story they made up for Myrcella’s injury isn’t true.

He’s just some guy who’s jealous he’s not as famous as his cousin and might do something crazy to make himself so. He’s not a secret Targ or Doran’s deep cover agent, he’s just some asshole.

My personal crackpot theory is he ends up stealing Dawn out of jealousy issues. No evidence for that beyond it would seem to fit his personality.

I don’t know how you measure crack pottery, but that’s pretty tame around here.

I could totally see this happening. Where is Dawn anyway, displayed over a mantelpiece somewhere in Starfall?

I have these silly notions of supporting theories with evidence. When I don't have any beyond "it would fit his character" I label it appropriately. :P

I call that head canon! And I have a lot of it.

Seriously, given the fact that he’s clearly jealous of Arthur’s fame, which he attributes to his wielding Dawn, and that he’s now essentially an outlaw with little to loose, I would call your idea speculative, but certainly not “crackpot”.

Basing things on character motivation and narrative makes us odd ducks around here. We should start a club.

He tried to kill a little girl. He isn't a good guy.

He failed to kill an unarmed little girl. He's got middling and mediocre skill.

He's dangerous because he tries to kill little girls like any random murderous loser of the same ilk you might read about in the paper.

Being able to figure out how to get what we want without having to kill children is one of the many things that separates the non loser population of the word and westeros from the loser population.

There is very little evidence to support Darkstar being skilled. Arianne's assessment of combat prowess is very limited and the only mentions of darkstar that I can think of. Too often people take the narration for truth. The only actual evidence we have speaks to his incompetence.

He's got a nickname and a cool one at that from the perspective of a adolescent boy so I think readers tend to play him up in their mind.

Mostly agreed, but it wasnt any random murder. He was deeply invovled in a coup plot, but we are not entirely sure who he was taking orders from (if anyone). But we do have pretty good evidence he straight up tried to kill Myrcella. That puts him into a pretty despicible category...Jaime Lannister rings a bell.

I'm down with this. I actually tried to work it into my Vulturestar theory (in need of an update to include better TWOIAF details, such as the Dayne who was "Sword of the Evening" that Nymeria sent to the Wall), but I didn't think it was necessary in the context of what I was saying. As a point, nearly every time Gerold mentions Dawn, attention is brought to his own sword. Foreshadowing? Douchebaggery? You decide!

Guys who try to kill children don't fit in the category of heroes.

That is the likeliest assessment.

I subscribe to that theory. He could come to Starfall claiming to get a tapestry, and then roll up Dawn in the tapestry, leaving without anyone suspecting anything.
