"Before the Citadel sends one of their own..."

Marwyn mentions that he believed that the Maesters would send someone to Dany eventually, but we have not seen a hint of this plan in any real form actually. Was he wrong? Is he really the one they are sending? Do we even have a list of suspects?

I can only think of one person that could be a potential candidate that the Maesters actually sent. Maester Kedry that went with Quenyn's party who was slain by pirates. Quentyn makes it sound like they lost the Gandalf of their party when he died, he had the fluency of languages and experience needed to help the group through the difficulties they would face.

I find it a little odd though, that Doran managed to secure him for this "quest". He seems very suite for it, but if the Citadel is not to be trusted as Marwyn alludes to on matters concerning dragons, how possible would it be for Kedry to be a double agent so that he could muss things up for Dany and co? He really is the only suspect that comes to my mind since, you know, he really is the only one available for us to dissect.

I feel like Marwyn was suggesting that if the Citadel sends "one of their own", it wouldn't actually be to counsel Dany but to try and kill her dragons. I'm guessing Kedry was going to do this, or at least feed info back to the Citadel

If anything, the Citadel will send someone to ingratiate themselves into Dany's life/rule. Now that she is someone worth paying attention to, they want to have a pony in that race.

It is too late for them to send someone to kill the dragons. Who would sign up for that suicide mission?

Unless the Maesters know something we don't. They do have that exceedingly rare book called The Death of Dragons. If you buy into the theory that Munkun organized the elimination of the last of the dragons during his tenure as Grand Maester and Regent then they've successfully killed larger dragons than Drogon before.

Well, dragons eat, food can be poisoned. That'd be a cool plot twist, everyones expecting all this three dragons raising hell shit and Rheagal and Viserion die of a "stomach bug" in the next book.

ETA; Plus its being constantly established that Maester's know how to poison, like, quite a lot.

Three young dragons is apparently supposed to scare off the group of people who've are rumoured to have been the ones to off full grown ones? Cool story. Nah, the Citadel will side with Aegon.

I just wanna point out that while it's the same organization it's obviously not the same group of people. Anyone who was involved in the poisoning of the last dragons is long dead. There's no reason to think they would have passed down their anti-dragon agenda once it was thought they were extinct. Just their general anti-magic agenda.

I doubt it was Maester Kedry. I know things aren't completely chronological even within the same book, but Doran told Arianne he had sent Quentyn a-questing a while before we got to Sam talking to Marwyn at the Citadel. I don't know if the Citadel believed any of the sailors' tales enough to strike out that early when there was some debate among the prologue characters.

I wouldn't go so far as to rule it out completely, I just think it's unlikely.

I doubt the Citadel would send somebody with such an important mission with the Greyjoys. Chances are that guy would never reach Essos.

Can't they send more than one guy? I mean, sounds really stupid for a gigantic organization such as the Citadel to only send one maester to taka care of dragons. Maybe he was one of the sent maesters?

What about Victarion/Euron's maester? I mean, if anyone could do it... and he did have ravens in the ship with him.

They could send someone else for a certainty, though it is certainly not the maester that went with Victarion. That was just one of the maesters that Eurojn plucked from one of the castles on the Shield Islands, so his inclusion has less to do with Citadel conspiracy and more to do with "Do this and don't die horribly".

That is a point. Perhaps Victarion's maester was truly trying to kill him, in order to weaken the Ironborn invasion on Oldtown. Knowing he is out of the way, which others are likely maesters to be sent there? Which of the maesters we've seen could be sent?

The Greyjoys don't practice the Faith of the Seven, so they have little interest in maesters. Generally the follow the Drowned God, Victarion the exception now possibly with a red priest converting him to R'hollor's cause.

Welcome to the forum!

The Citadel predates the Andal invasion and the Seven, it is a First Men institution concerned with knowledge, and unrelated to religion (although there may be connections with the Children of the Forest). :)
