The real war is against!

We all know the story.

Westeros was made up of 7 kingdoms, then Aegon reach Westeros and melted them into one Kingdom....

Rhaegar stole Lyanna, the Starks and Baratheons rebelled, The Targs were mostly killed and Robert became king..

Eddard became hand of the king, he noticed incest between Cersei and his brother and before he told Robert about it Robert was killed and Eddard was arrested.....

Robb Stark rebelled, he rose the banners against the Lannisters, he won a couple of wars and he was betrayed.

Joffrey married Margaery. Before marrying the wedding the queen of thorns learnt how brutal the boy is and killed him.

What do these kings and princes have in common? None of them were able to beat the institution The Targ's fate was sealed the day Rhaegar went stole Lyanna. Robert the conqueror was forced to marry Cersei and was killed the day his best mate dared defying another big family, this time the Lannisters. Robb insulted the Freys and Boltons and Joffrey risked treated Margaery Tyrell badly. The truth is that real power lie far from the iron throne. Those sitting on it are just puppets, whims in the hands of the big families whom in turn have to make sure that their banner men won't back stab them. Good king material like Rhaegar, Stannis and Robb Stark are betrayed or they dont find support while idiots and oafs become kings because they are 'popular'

Aegon achieved absolutely nothing. He only created space for his little family to live (the Crownlands) and changed the name of kings into lords. Anyone who truly want to rule Westeros must get rid of this institution, this web of power which is stronger then any king.

The moral of ASOIAF is... never get married. It will kill you.

The things we love destroy us is a strongly supported philosophy in ASoIaF.

Re the OP, the story is also very concerned with exploring elements of power, including, as the author says 'the human heart in conflict with itself'. I have always thought the real war was against the IT - or the IT is the primary antagonist in the story, the narrative object that can be likened to the One Ring in LotRs.

It's a slight twist on a standard narrative (but not entirely unique). The mono myths, like Dany & Jon, aren't leaving home to save it from an existential threat. They have left home to save it from itself, because the IT has corrupted what home should be.

Possibly the whole planet is involved and not just Westeros. Possibly the magic proves to be outwith anyone's control. Dragons get larger and walls become broken but blatantly obvious is not what the author is trying to lead us to. Too many possiblies probably but Targs are not Gods but seem to have ultimate control over a foreign land after 300 odd years. Seriously though, we all realise how special this series is and exceeding all of our expectations is almost impossible. I do not have any doubt the ending will be anything less than timeless.

Ftr Arya I hope kills a dragon or Sansa and either ser Arthur or Rhaegar lead an army from Hardholme. Either one but speculating makes it obviiusly engrossing.

Winds of Winter when it arrives will be the standout work of fiction in my lifetime.
