The Interview [Spoilers]

Sci-2

Recommended Posts

I'm going to come out and say it: I loved this. It really was the best Seth Rogen and James Franco collaboration so far :D And I really liked Pineapple Express and This is the End. I don't know what it is about this pairing, but they are just funny. I used to hate Seth Rogen, I had to sit through Zack and Mire Making a Porn once, which felt like torture. Nowadays, I love him and Franco. They need to make more films together.

Sure, these are stupid comedies, but damn it these are smart people making it and it just shows. The idea behind the Interview was brilliant. This really shows what an asshat Kim-Jong Un is really. If I were him I would have demanded the worldpremière to take place in Pyongyang :p

Can I say I really loved the ending here. The action was really well done. Never would have expected this from a comedy like this. The way Kim-Jong Un went down in the end was great. The tank with Katy Perry music, that just doesn't get old. I knew he wasn't going to come out unscathed, but damn it, they managed to slip the tank by me. Normally, I would have called Checkhov's gun the minute I saw it, but the movie just lulled me to sleep (in a good way) with Kim-Jong Un's issues with Margaritas.

Is it that bad? Overall, I'm hearing very negative things all over about this movie.

It's a Seth Rogen and James Franco movie. If you liked their previous collaborations, you'll love this. Trust me.

Sigh, truly if you wanted to single out a racist element you should have gone with the Asian accents. This is just patently false. For starters, the iron fist is mentioned. There is the question about the concentration camps, as well as King-Jong Un's batshit crazy behaviour. The point about Kim-Jong Un is that he's worshipped as a God by his people. Now, I don't know how well-versed you are in our own history, but it has taken us over 2000 years to get from underneath the clutches of religion (heck, even now we aren't completely free). The no pooping is just the element of the divine myth on which the movie focusses, because it is a stupid comedy. Finally, the N-Koreans didn't rise up because of the fact that they knew their leader pooped. They rose up because Kim was shown to be human by Franco.

Velticar,

"The clutches of religion" really? Religion does nothing positive ever?

Not if it's a (huge personal) cult divised to legitimise a totalitarian state.

EDIT: Note that I didn't state that religion has had no positive effects at all. However, I do think everyone with a little bit of sense would agree that we are better off in a world where religion does not dictate every aspect of our lives. That's the type of situation we have (mostly) left behind in the West.

Velticar,

I do like the seperation of Church and State I simply don't think that because I have religious beliefs that I am "in the clutches of religion".

1) Veltigar not Velticar

2) Again, where did I claim any of this. I have met many unreasonable religious nutcases. I have also met many more reasonable believers. I was clearly making a comparison between the type of 'religion' being practiced in NORTH-KOREA of all places and the type of religion practiced before people became more enlightened (I'm talking the time of crusades, Jihads, Pogroms, divine right of kings, etc.).

Nope... I have loved everything else they have done together and the vast majority of the stuff they have done individually. This movie had a few funny moments, but overall just wasn't up to par with the rest of their work. Most of the humor felt forced, and was based on characters and situations that were completely unbelievable.

This movie would have tanked at the box office in wide release, I am absolutely sure of that. I still found a couple of chuckles out of it, but all and all it is a lot of hype for not much delivery.

Was okay, but like Howdy said this would've tanked if released in the theaters. Sony is lucky there was a controversy.

I don't think it was intentionally racist? That said, they might've actually mentioned something about how S.Korea is in the present. Was a bit sad not to see any K-pop stars. ;-)

As for religion, obviously that shit is complicated and needs a thread in Genchat to discuss. (hint, hint)

Meh, I thought it was 'aight. As a hater of Pineapple Express and Superbad, I thought this was better. It's a trashy comedy, nothing wrong with that. It had a fair few laughs though.

I really liked Seth Rogen's character, but Dave Skylark fell flat for me. He just didn't work at all, the best material came from Rogen. Whether he was shoving a tiny missile up his ass or getting his fingers bitten off, everything he did was better than Franco's character with the exception of the Eminem homosexuality reveal.

Honestly I thought both had their moments, but there were long stretches in this movie with minimal humor.

I was hoping they'd use the expectation of cliches to their advantage but this didn't really happen.

I thought it was fine. If someone had asked me to sit down and write a script for a Seth Rogan/James Franco movie, this is probably what I'd have written. It's exactly as I expected it would be, no surprises. A movie with a bunch of juvenile jokes with a heavy focus on teh gayz being hahah funny.

I still have no desire to see this movie, just think it is funny that NK understand us so little. If they had not done anything, this would have likely bomb, and would at best run at midnight on a 2nd rate cable channel in a year or so.

Instead, it got banned, unbanned, and put on line, and will make Sony, Franco, and Rogan a bunch of money.

That is something I do find rather funny.

Not that much money. It only made $1 million on Christmas day, which is pretty terrible for a $44 million dollar budget. That's theater sales only, so with VOD it made something more than that, but its doubtful that this breaks even. I doubt Rogen and Franco care though, they both got paid upfront ($8.4 million and $6.5 million, respectively) and can blame the poor box office on circumstances outside their control.
