What is it about S4 that makes it so much more watchable than S1-3?

I swear there's something different, but I'm not familiar enough with the in's and out's of TV to know what it is.There are moments that I rewatch from every episode of S3 where I get tired of it and need to fast forward. I get annoyed for a few minutes of an episode because it feels so schematic. Or something.

There are hardly any of these in S4. Can someone with a better knowledge of television structure explain why this might be. Thanks.

Well putting aside I found season 4 to be the most annoying because of the butterfly effect plot inconsistencies

I would say it's because the other seasons tend to have a bit more of a slow build while this season had big events spaced out throughout the entire season, eg Purple Wedding E2, Mountain and Viper E8, Battle of the Wall E9, Tywin Dead E10

With the exception of 1 episode (number 4) I think it is paced like movies, eg there is some kind of action sequences early, then dialogue and intrigue and action again

That has to be your reaction, not mine.

I have found all the seasons equally watchable.

Only glitch I found was season 2 in Qarth, they just didn't try hard enough to translate that difficult story from CoK to visual narrative, it defeated them... tho in the long run it was not awful.

Ehhhh, to each their own I guess. Honestly I found the fourth season to be the most plodding and dull, even despite the faster pace compared to the first three seasons. With all the filler and overly stretched out plot threads, the general narrative just wasn't as interesting as it had been before. Various characters who I had previously loved too (Tywin, Tyrion, Arya, the Hound, Ygritte, Jorah, etc) started to become an enormous bore.

From all that I've seen and heard regarding Season 5, it looks to be a vast improvement over the last, which I couldn't be any more thrilled by.

It's not the greatness of the great moments, it's the lack of poor ones. I'm pretty hard-pressed to find a single scene in s4 that feels like I would ever want to skip through it. And I'd love to know why. I strongly suspect it has something to do with the technical aspects of the show.

* Quickly getting myself into contradictory territory here. My sneaking suspicion is it's the writing. They've somehow figured out how to pace it such that it flows the way it should. But. There are some biggies that stick out like Crasters. I wish I'd acknowledged those in my OP.

Since seasons 3 and 4 came from (mostly) a single book, much of season 4 was set up in season 3, so major events could happen out of the gate. Like killing off poor king Joffery. The other seasons relied on the usual structure of setting up for the one big climax at the end.

I just think the overall production value has went up. It looks like a movie.

Beautiful costumes.

Amazing sets.

Great acting.

Fantastic story.

Boom.

Pretty much this, plus it has more spectacle throughout from start to finish. I also find it the easiest to rewatch.

^403 and 405 weren't well-paced but I think the rest of the season flowed extremely well.

I think that in s3 the production finally found a winning formula for juggling storylines with eps. 308 and 309 and that they applied it to s4 more broadly. That formula is to feature fewer storylines per ep. and to have more than one exciting setpiece per ep. as well, instead of expecting only one to carry the whole episode. 403 and 405's pacing problems, to my mind, were because they tried to touch base with too many storylines when there really wasn't much happening in some of them. This was a problem the show had A LOT of in s2 and s3. (It didn't so much in s1 because of the more-focused source material).

Because Oberyn Martell.

Oberyn Martell was one of the few things I liked about the season. It was frustrating to watch inconsistent sub plots that didn't go anywhere or romantic sub plots for Dany's entourage, all the while hearing that it's necessary for the show runners to cut out book material due to time constraints. Oberyn was one of the things that saved it for me.

Actually, its the least watchable season for me. I find it pretty much impossible to watch episodes 3, 4, and 5

Can you say and analyze what exactly it was about episodes 3 , 4, and 5 that was impossible?

We just have your statement and nothing else.

King's Landing and the Wall storylines were better than ever. Dany's storyline was also improved by the better Daario and by showing Dany make mistakes. Team Dragonstone was also vastly improved by having more Davos and Stannis and less Stannis and Mel. I also really liked the Hound and Arya and Brienne and Pod scenes.

My main beef however is with the Vale storyline. I don't need to be Sullied to know that having the Jon Arryn revelation and Lysa's death in different scenes, Lysa's scream and Sansa's new appearence are not good decisions. Sophie Turner's acting is also most of the a hit or a miss, but Aidan Gillen is really the one who ruins it for me. At least with Dany's storyline I can like the scenes because actors like Iain Glen and Harry Lloyd somewhat make up for Emilia Clarke's performance.

To sum up:

+ So far the best King's Landing

+ So far the best Wall

+ Pedro Pascal

+ Kit Harrington

+ Multiple improvements with other storylines

- Certain scenes were in the wrong places

- Emilia Clarke

- Aidan Gillen

I still like season 1 more, but season 4 is pretty close to being my favorite season.
