Game of Thrones on IMAX

Episode 10 would be the finale though.

It would be the tele finale :D So season 7 would have 12-13 episodes, effectively. I don't think they'd try on only giving you 9 episodes on TV and saying, go catch episode 10 and the flicks. But they might end season 3 before they end the story.

Let's say it all sets up for massive conflict, with the major players in place - Dany, Jon, Bran, Jamie et al. They are squared off, on their respective sides but you don't get to see how it all plays out without going to the cinema.

I read an interview with GRRM where he spoke about wanting to finish on the big screen because he didn't think TV would have the budget for it.

It would be an interesting direction for HBO to take and another first for the series, like finishing before the books. I could be a conspiracy nut and suggest that GRRM is busy getting the final screenplays organised for his vision, which is why he doesn't have time for the books - it's not like GRRM hasn't tried to be successful at screenplay writing before.

I personally don't know how I feel about the idea - I would like the series to culminate with the fantasy elements taking front seat and being displayed in all their glory before the bittersweet character drama and I do think an all in brawl with fantastical elements would be better serviced with a film budget. The flipside is it might feel too fast for 7 seasons of character and world building.

When they brought down the statue of the Harpy her legs were straight. My husband swears she was kneeling in previous scenes. Did anyone else notice that?

No the statue was standing , starting in season 4 and still standing in S5.

Well, seems the final figures are in:

One week , 205 theaters, $1,896,092.

9249 per theater per week.

Don't know what the final call was, seen no analysis.

Heard it did well in big cities not so well elsewhere.

From the outside looks good considering almost zero advertising only news buzz and word of mouth.

I think they will try again, we shall see.

I wonder how much the conversion process cost. It was digital imax but I seriously doubt it was as simple as a computer algorithm to format it.

It would make sense to do it for premieres and finales, but maybe the conversion process takes too long for them to be ready by the time the show aired.

I don't think it was cheap. However I am pretty sure HBO got their licensing fee up front.

I seem to remember IMAX says they estimated 2 million and nearly made it.

They also delayed opening to add more theaters , which I don't think was easy.

I think this was a test , not about making money, what their conclusion was we shall have to wait and see.

Given the short advertising campaign the numbers were really good. Maybe starting with the season five finale (if they advertise it as early as the season five premiere), they could probably double those numbers. How well did the season four finale showing in theaters do? Not the imax version, but the one that showed the night the finale aired?

I would say the imax of S04E09 and S04E10 were well received. Imagine if they were able to show the season five finale in imax like they showed the season four finale in theaters.

They never showed the Season 4 finale in theaters before the IMAX experience.

Its not fair. So much talking about IMax & cinema showings of episodes & *none* of it here. If anyone from HBO is listening, I'm living in the city with the highest level of illegal downloads of GOT in the whole world. Melbourne, Australia. Most people don't have cable TV here & many can't even get it - cable has never been connected to their homes. Why can't we get GOT in cinemas? IMAX, ordinary cinema, I'm happy to pay to see 10 episodes a year in a cinema. Its probably cheaper than having cable TV installed.

Wow Green Eyes, I had no idea you have such a hard time trying to watch GoT. I feel really bad. Here I was going on and on about how great the Imax show was. I apologize for being so inconsiderate.

I've never been to Australia. I looked up Melbourne on Wiki. I didn't know it was so big. It sure is pretty. I would love to visit there one day. Especially the Book Shops. Has the internet hurt those businesses? It has where I live in the United States.

Hey, Tower of Almond Joy, glad you had such a great time watching the IMAX shows. It's just a pity they haven't been shown outside the US.

I'm thinking of finding out whether a strange looking socket in my house is connected to a cable & whether its the right cable company to watch GOT.

The internet has hurt bookshops here, we had a great mushrooming of Borders bookshops in the previous 10 years. Now they all folded a couple of years ago. The only bookshops left are the specialist ones which were here before the chains and the high rent shopping malls. I like the symmetry, actually.

They did end up bringing it to the UK. Maybe they'll show it in more territories.
